Wu * Did not attend. oail^s s=3 ASBESTOS PROOUCTS IN LRA Report of the Second Committee Meeting April 21, 1976 The following agenda was discussed: ^ Regulations No new information is available from Mr. Waltz on the additional restrictions which will be imposed July 1. Present plans based on the reconvnendations of the Comittee do not allow for stockpiling asbestos containing items. Committee Reports Development Engineering Kevlar laminate samples have been prepared for abrasion and compressive creep tests. Additional laminate has been ordered from Hampton with delivery due in June. This laminate is the proposed replacement for asbestos phenolic 44141AJ. Kevlar materials are difficult to machine; however, it is believed this short coming will be resolved with additional development. Epoxy-coated Nomex has been ordered from Bedford and 100 yds. will be available early in May. Ceramic-glass paper samples coated with both shellac and epoxy are due late in April. Brushless Exciters - Medium Turbine Generators This group has completed the review of their asbestos usage and the following items are reported: The most probable replacement will be glass cloth edging tape from Carolina Narrow Fabrics. Additional data is being collected from the supplier to obtain a material number (John Orobne). 42341 BN - Shellac treated asbestos paper for turn insulation of strap wound field coils. - One or more of the following materials will be suitable for this application: . 41524PY(ET-1190) and similar thin glass cloth polyester resin materials are available from Bedford and are being used for similar applications at Buffalo. (ET-1318) - This .005" Nomex paper has an epoxy adhesive coating on both sides. Samples are now at Bedford for both shellac and epoxy coating. These constructions are part of a long range program to replace the more expensive Nomex which is availa ble from only one supplier - Oupont. 65711AA-Asbestos covered space heater cable. Eight suppliers are listed for this item. Glass-silicone or glassTeflon would be practical for this application. Purchasing should contact the present suppliers for replacements. (Paul Wike) 42251AA - Asbestos gasket material (compounded and ungraphited). Johns-Manville is the only supplier of this item and they have been contacted by both Purchasing and Development Engineering for a reconw mended replacement. 415H8A - Asbestos cloth used for welding, burning and brazing. This recommended replacement for this item is Refrasil(413)4CC) and treated glass cloth (number needed).
