The 5 *nd 6 c h l o r i n a t e d biphenyls (Arcelor 1254 and 1260) have b e e n f o u n d at l i m i t e d l o c a t i o n s in w a t e r , in b i r d s and some for m s of aquatic life. Recent indications are that such biphenyls m a y e f f e c t r e p r o d u c t i o n of fowl life and m a y be t o x i c to shr i m p . T h e s e p r o d u c t s are not toxic from the ac u t e s t a n d p o i n t to man or f i s h b u t t h e r e is s o m e e v i d e n c e of e c o l o g i c a l b u i l d u p in c e r t a i n w a t e r d e p o s i t s , in f ish and u l t i m a t e l y in b i r d life.
A r o c l o r s 1248 and lower in n u m b e r a r e b e l i e v e d to be biodegradable but this has not been conclusively established as yet.

The a v a i l a b i l i t y of a l ternate products to s a t is f y customer requirements was reviewed. Main problems are that no replacement p r o d u c t is a v a i l a b l e for c a p a c i t o r s and r e p l a c e m e n t p r o d u c t s for other uses pose a pollution problem.
In p l a s t i c i z e r u s e s , e v i d e n c e is not a v a i l a b l e as to w h e t h e r Aroclors escape from end products, either through leeching or by d i s p e r s a l in b u r n i n g .
