SUPERVISORS HANDBOOK SH-8-J8 June, 1987 DRAFT ASBESTOS MATERIALS: REMOVAL, REPAIR, OR RENOVATION Asbestos containing materials such as insulation, gaskets, packings, heat tapes, hot gloves, etc. may be present in a laboratory or a pilot plant. OSHA has amended its asbestos standard by reducing the permissible exposure limit from a 2.0 fibers/cc level to a 0.2 fibers/cc level. In addition, there are a number of requirements that must be followed when removing, repairing or renovating the asbestos containing material, to stay in compliance with the government regulations. At the Technical center, asbestos insulation is no longer installed, and every effort is made to control the release of asbestos fibers in the air from materials, already installed, containing asbestos. Listed below are practices that must be followed to prevent exposure of employees to asbestos and stay in compliance with the government regulations. 1. Check the equipment or the pipes in your area of responsibility for broken insulation. If insulation is found to be broken or accidently damaged, consult with Industrial Hygiene (Extension 3750) to ascertain whether the material is indeed asbestos. If so the suspect material must be repaired or removed. 2. Repair or removal of asbestos-containing insulation must be done by authorized personnel who have the knowledge of the procedures and are trained in the requirements of the OSHA asbestos standard. Certain personnel in the Services Department have these credentials to undertake such projects. Involve the Coatings Technicians in the Services Department to help you remove or repair the asbestos insulation. 3. Dispose any asbestos-containing materials such as asbestos gloves, old asbestos insulation tapes etc. using proper personal protective equipment and following established waste disposal procedures (SH-8-B3). When in doubt, get the help from Industrial Hygiene group in determining proper procedure for handling the material and from Environmental Protection Department for proper disposal of the material. 4. Do not disturb asbestos insulation without the use of proper personal protective equipment.
