Gentlemen: I

It is becoming increasingly important that v/e make full and accurate use of the knack engine which we purchased from you recently. Tie realise fully that your rigid instructions regarding the careful handling of the concentrated tetraethyl lead are to be carried out to the letter, but in the preparation ox material for testing and in the actual testing operation our operator claims that he. cannot avoid inhaling to some degree the fumes from the fluid. He is most conscientious and reliable in all of his work, yet the danger Involved,, or rather described as attending the open handling of this fluid has been so stressed that he has a genuine fear regarding his health.
.
We are not possessed of technical knowledge that would place us in po
sition to tell and assure him that his fear is unfounded and is only the
result of his imagination. We cannot determine to what extent there is
inhalation of fumes, nor- do we know what ..vital danger, If any, may result.
Just at this time a burette was broken and of course the conditions des
cribed were aggravated. Altogether the operator1s present state of mind
and nerves is such as to interfere with his otherwise careful and ac
curate testing.

We do not intend to; nor do we wank to lessen one bit our care in handling
t'lOfr
this fluid, but the thought occurs/that you can help us in this problem
by a frank word as to -whether or not continued operation under the
present condition involves real and vital danger to the operator. Natur
ally we shall respect your opinion as entirely and technically authentic
but you will understand that both we and our operator would -rather know
the actual facts. ,

We thank you for your g6od cooperation in prompt reply.
