SECRET - COMPANY CONFIDENTIAL
I. INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTS (South Bound Brook)
A. Felts and Papers
I
A trial*.-run-of a low latex-acrylonitrile gasketing var successfully made to meet Detroit Gasket specifications. Samples of the run have been submitted to the customer for approval.
Product data sheets for all GAF gasketing papers that meet general ASTM or specific customer specifications, and laboratory-developed formulations ready for plant trials when desired, have been prepared for Marketing. The information is required for introduction of pro ducts to small gasket cutter accounts.
B. Millboard
The initial $4,500 trial order for Proctor-Silex millboard met customer specifications and a repeat order for four times this amount has been received.
C. Automotive
A release- has been obtained from the Ford Company for the 1972 Thunderbird wheelhouse cover made by the molded mastic process. 64,000 cars, requiring two pieces each, are involved in the model year and initial delivery is required at the end of June, 1971. R&D is working with Engineering and Manufacturing on the semi-works design, processing conditions and packaging. Development work to improve handleability and cold flow properties is also underway.
During a visit by an R&D representative to the Chrysler laboratory in Detroit, it was determined that their method of testing non staining mastic was inconsistent and arbitrary. As a result of this trip, laboratory-made samples of a lower cost, non-staining, formu lation was approved. Pending confirmation of approval on a pro duction run. Marketing has received releases from Chrysler on two non-staining mastic parts.
D. Thermal Insulation
Seventy, commercial-size, block and pipe covering pieces of Calsilite made without asbestos have been shipped to an applicator for field evaluation. Marketing has also obtained a trial order for one car load of this product which should be available about the end of March. Samples have been submitted to other customers and a meeting was held with the Naval Ship Engineering Center to discuss their procedure for obtaining approval.
A one-batch trial of asbestos-free Calsilite with corrosion inhibitor was successfully made and product passed the 6-day, Dana, stress corrosion test. Partial replacement of cellulosic fibers with glass to improve compliance with Naval soaking heat, weight loss speci fications is being investigated.
