One grinder was also in operation but no rivetter were. A personnel sample was taken on the person working on grinder #3. Cl'.',w*' \\ '/ The laboratory results for the semi-annual asbestos monitoring samples collected at the Argyle Road plant on March 22, 1977, have been re ceived. ,The results show no concentrations in excess of a 2.0 fiber/ cc level. The sample results are as follows: Excello Automatic Drill (Brian Beaunne) ( 0.77 fibers/cc Grinder 03 (Diane Jacques) 0.14 fibers/cc Riveting 05 (Susan Dobsky) 0.49 fibers/cc ' Bag Collector Cleaning (Gary Knuckle) 0.09 fibers/cc The results from the Bag Collector Cleaning operation indicate an em ployee exposure well below the 2.0 fiber/cc level. However, this re sult does not accurately assess the problems being experienced with asbestos waste disposal or environmental protection. A continuing effort must be made to implement controls which will assure emissions to the atmosphere are at the lowest possible level. If I can be of assistance in this matter, please contact me. Finally, solvent samples were collected at the Prince Road plant. The results are as follows: ' Vapor Degreaser ' (TLV = 100 PPM) 0.17 PPM Trichloroethylene Spray Painting Backing Plates Trichloroethylene TLV = 100 PPM,Concentration Toluene TLV = 100 PPM,Concentration Xylene TLV = '00 PPM, Con centrar, ion = 2.42 PPM => 5.70 PPM =* 20.81 PPM The results indicate employee .eposures well within established limits. I suspect the trichloroethylen . at the spray painting operation is carry-over from the degreasor. The paint solvent Is most probably a mixture of toluene and xylene. As a result of your letter, air sampling was carried out and the results reported June 27, 1977 were sent to Mr. G. Detenbeck, Industrial Relations Administrator. Of the six personnel and two area samples taken all were below the Ontario standard of 2 fibres greater than 5 micrometers in length per cc of air. The results ranged from 0.3 to 1.5 fibres/cc with a mean value of 0.6 fibres/cc. I trust this action is satisfactory to you. If you have further questions please feel.free to contact this branch. Hone of the eight samples were above this limit. Observations Housekeeping at the time of ray visit was fair. The dust collector is outside, adjacent to the grinding room. The doors to the enclosure of the dust collector, containing the waste . box, appeared to be in need of repairs. ' At the tine of sampling, the waste box was only half full. Normally it is from three quarters full to full, before it is changed. Wind direction was out of the west at approximately 5 to 10 knots, . with no precipitation. ; A CR:lm C. Rhodes^/^/ : ~v .
