Dear Dr. Xehoe:
Thank you very much:for your letter of October 16 relative to the Los Angeles smog problem.
I think.your analysis of the entire situation is very, sound. As a result of my survey of the situation, I was not convinced Girin v he automotive equipment was a very serious offender in relation to some of the other sources of air contamination in the Los Angeles basin nd so, I think there is no immediate urgency from the standpoint of automotive equipment. However, in the long range, as you point out, I believe it is the respon sibility of the automotive industry to keep posted on the influence of automotive equipment on air pollution in congested city traffic. Whether Los Angeles is the point to start such an investigation is a question in my mind. I do not believe that traffic conditions are as congested in Les Angeles as they are
n some other sections of the country.
Furthermore, with the. cha:,nge in administration of the smoke control in Los Angeles I think it would be well to wait a little while until the new smiiok control administrator, Colonel McCabe, has had an opportunity to study the entire problem. Then if, after having studied: the problem, he desires to call in some help from the automotive industry, we might resume a serious investigation of this problem in Los Angeles along the lines suggested in your letter!
Best regards.
truly,
