File Memo Trenton Chemical July 26, 1972
Subject: Asbestos
On July 18, 19 and 20 the writer accompanied Mr. R. Zoller and Mr. J. Vukovich. representatives of the Michigan State Health Department and the U. S. Department of Labor Target Health Hazards Program. Mr. 7oller and Mr. Vukovich surveyed operations where asbestos is used in both the Chemical Plant and Friction Materials Building in Trenton.
Four samples were collected simultaneously with R. Zoller and J. Vukovich and all sample results were well within the 5 fiber per milliliter threshold limit value for asbestos. Several other samples were taken by these gentlemen at operations which were sampled during our periodic survey dated June 28. 1972.
The sampling technique used by these gentlemen could be challenged if any sample results were found to be excessive. They attached the sampler to individuals and left the area. Employee could load the filter by intentionally generating an asbestos cloud in front of the sampler. Mr. Zoller agreed that this is a possibility.
Following this study R. Zoller and J. Vukovich stated that the ventilation system appeared to control the asbestos dust in the subject operations. If their sample results are significantly different than our sample results, a study should be made to re-evaluate our laboratory technique.
