HORMUTH CONSTRUCTION DIVISION ROCKDALE WORKS MEMORANDUM Preliminary 1989 September 26 RE: ASBESTOS REMOVAL PROCEDURE The following procedure is to be followed in the verification and removal of asbestos containing materials (ACM). 1. Requests for verification and removals of ACM shall be directed to Environmental Department. Rockdale Works - Jim Saxton Sandow Power Plant - Mark Bryson Sandow Mine - Louis Lindsey 2. The responsible Environmental Department will verify, if necessary, the material as ACM by sampling materials with a training Alcoan. The samples will be taken to the Alcoa Lab for testing and verification (tests in Lab can be performed in approximately two (2) hours if Lab personnel are available). 3. Laboratory results of samples will be confirmed to the Environmental Department, if the material is verified as ACM, Jim Saxton and the Safety Department shall be notified. 4. Jim Saxton will prepare and submit, if required, the "Texas Air Control Board Asbestos Demolition/Renovation Notification Form". Jim Saxton will also contact Kevin Rolan to request removal of ACM by an outside Contractor. 5. Kevin Rolan will select and or bid the work with approved asbestos abatement Contractors and schedule site visits and issue purchase orders based on construction schedule from Jim Saxton. Kevin will also issue purchase orders for air monitoring as required. TJH.mm ARD 004044 MEMORANDUM Preliminary 1989 September 26 Page 2 6. Kevin will monitor and coordinate the removal of the ACM with the selected Contractor and the department where the work is being performed. Kevin will also coordinate the disposal of the ACM in the designated asbestos waste disposal site. Regulation requires the asbestos waste be covered within twenty-four (24) hours after disposal with a minimum of six (6) inches of soil. 7. The general asbestos abatement Contractor and air monitoring Contractor will submit a report to J.J. LaClair upon completion of work. Joe LaClair will forward this report to Pittsburgh Procurement Department who will maintain the records of the work for thirty (30) years. T.J. HORMUTH TJH:lc ARD 004046
