Dear Jim:
The enclosed is a copy of our file Including erection reports on the above subject furnace*
The correspondence should be of help to you, but to sum up our problems:
1* The furnace design was in error in that the charge wall burners are non adjustable as far as aiming due to being installed between the steelwork and the brickwork. This has caused 6n-8H strip on either side of the sinter bed to be un burned.
2. Hi-Alumina castable was used around all burners (see rport dated March 19, 1958)* This has burned out and exposed the 60^ Alumina wall tile which has burned in a very irregular pattern..
3. Build up of Sinter on the lower noses has been exceptionally bad. lS"-^1*" thick at times. Clean out is accomplished with sledge hammers and pick axes that take more tile than sinter scale.
4. Patching of hollows has been attempted with Ramtite, but has not been satisfactory.
5. Temperatures ranged from 2300 - 2480. This is being increased to 2550 / by the installation of a second blower and larger burner orifices.
6. Our recommendations will be Carborundum veneer as soon as we receive prices from Chicago.
Hope this is of help, Jim.
Very truly yours,
M. H. DETRICK COMPANY
