As such, its use is appropriate for protection against asbestos dusts in concen trations less than 51 fibers per cc. Also, the 3M #8710 single use respirator has been approved under the new schedule, 21C, and is likewise acceptable for asbestos. Since these two respirators, which are smaller and relatively more comfortable than most of the other respirators on the previous lists sent you, we thought you would want to know of their suitability at an early date. A revised list of respiratory protective devices suitable for protection against asbestos dust is attached. The list is not complete. It is merely intended to present a representative group and includes some of the more commonly used brands. If you normally use and prefer other types, we suggest that you contact your supplier to determine which of his respirators meet the require ments of the OSHA regulation for asbestos. Although the regulation promulgated on July 7 specifies that only respirators approved under 30 CFR 11 shall be used for protection against asbestos dust, there is only one respirator approved under this schedule as of this date. However, the Bureau of Mines has allowed a transition period from the present to March 30, 197U# during which respirators approved under previous schedules will be considered as approved. After this date, we will be required to use filter and air-line respirators approved under 30 CFR 11 (these will be classified as 21C and 19C respectively). Until that time, we consider filter respirators approved under Schedule 21B and continuous flow or pressuredemand, air-line respirators approved under Schedule 19B to be appropriate for protection against asbestos dust.
