TO THB MHUBERS 07 'HTH LEAD INDUSTRIES ASSOCIATloyt As the Lead Industries Association Is no* over six months old It seems deelrebls at this tins to report briefly to the members regarding our activities. Shortly after our formal organisation, s j i office vaa taken In the Graybar Building, 420 Lex ington ATenue, convenient of access to members hav ing headquarters in uptown and downtown New Tork, and to members visiting from out-of-town. One of the first things we did was to visit Vashington for the purpose of acquainting the De partment of Justice and Federal Trade Commission with full details of our organisation and the ex tent of our proposed activities, Te are furnish ing these and other government departments Inter ested, with copies of all statistical data distri buted to our members, Ve have endeavored to guard the lead Indus trie from unfair competition. In this connection we have filed a protest with the Federal Trade Com mission relative to the use of the term "Leadite* for a product containing no lead end competing with caulking lead. Our statistical program was begun with the collection of weekly domestic pig lead sales statis tics. These are gathered and distributed on Uonday of each week and now cover lOOf of the domestic pig lead sold In the United States, As cur members know, the. fora of reporting domestic pig lead sales has been expanded to include information regarding the type of bueinese done and the grades of lead sold, Uembers ars now supplied with a comprehensive weekly picture of the lead me^ket. ----- ""VT1 / niu p. ^niinaiufjn, i '^npinwHtw .^jr^--.---r.-u-f-zinri,f.tv - i T-rt-*>1 -.yawrwi HA21535 | | |,j , r r - j n i i . . ,| | 11J | 1 ..................i ' w w . i i im - m r i i <J 1 o -*- Progress he* hean slow in the collection of statistics relating to various lead product* manufactured by our members, However. we hare succeeded in issuing statistics relating to lead plgasnta and expect eoon to pub11eh our flrat re port on metallic lead product#, In each oaa* e are covering a field not now touched by any other agency. The aeeceiation hae begun a euj-rey of the Flushing and building code situation In the large citiee of the United State# with a Tiew to en couraging or maintaining the epeclflcation of lead rather than inferior rus table metals for rarioua usee. In cooperation with the Bureau of Standard* and the American Gas Association, we ere arranging for a competitive te*t of baked red lead as a priming coat for protective pipe coverings. If this test provee successful the outlet for red lead should b* greatly increased. Te are continuously accumulating a large amount of useful data regarding lead and lead products to be made the basis for later educational and publicity effort*, Sc:./ of the lead industries have been receiving much und eir-ble and unwarranted publicity regarding lead poisoning, Te are investigating this serious problem with a view to counteracting thi* type of publicity. Early in the year, when Congress announced it* intention of writing * new tariff bill our association sounded the opinion of each member with respect to having the Association take part in tariff matter*. Our membership unanimously agreed that it was unde-' *iretie to request an* change up Or down in the rate* on lead oree, concent.**'-.!!1, metal, or finished pro duct*. Ecwever, some ot our manufacturing member* re quested the association to make a strong attempt te have the drawback law liberalised so that they could compete more readily In export market*. At the request of the Executive Committee your Secretary repreeented the association in this tariff matter at various con ferences in Washington. So far vs have been successful In presenting our views and feel oonfldent no action will be takea la revising the lead tariff, either up or down.
