Of course, their objects in doing so are fairly clear, and among other things they aro not particularly desirous of having the name "lead" appear in this oase. That is alright frost the standpoint of the aeneral Motors Company, but it is quite a question in sty mind as to whether the Bureau of Mines would be justified in adopting this name so early in the gome before it has hod the support of popular usage. The reasons for tqy objection are as followsi (1) it will lead to oonfuslon, especially If the noise ever beoomesjw^d^^nsed, as there are many other ethyl gases besides^totraetigrl leedt (2) since the real ob ject of our Imrestigotion is to determine whether or not lead is deleterious in the combustion produote, it Beans to me that we would be wise in our investigations to refer to its ohemlo&l name "tetraethyl lead", or one of the other ones possible. It was in our cooperative agreement that there should be no publicity on this investigation until it was completed and the final report pub I lished. If it should happen to get some publicity accidentally, it would not be so bad if the word "lead" were omitted as this term is apt to prejudice somewhat against its use. In our re port for publication we will, of course, use the correct term. In interbureau correspondence the trade name is an easy term to use and I do not see where it will cause any trouble.
