Steffey Date September 26, 1975 Subject ANNUAL INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE INSPECTION - LAKE CHARLES VCM PLANT t&AJjJU 4**JbJe*Z*I An Industrial Hygiene inspection was made of the Lake Charles VCM Plant on the afternoon of September 18, 1975. The purpose of the inspection was to physically check the installation from the standpoint of OSHA Standards which cover General Environmental Control-Sanitation and general use of toxic and hazardous materials. The following areas were covered from a general industrial hygiene standpoint: Main Office Maintenance Warehouse No. 2 Instrument Shop Control Building Warehouse No. 1 Welding Laboratory The following comments are made relative to the above areas of the VCM Plant: Main Office and Control Room - These areas were found to be in good condition. Maintenance - The storage area over the office should be cleaned and straightened. Materials should be stored in an orderly manner. This area is not posted for maximum load limit. There seems to be some doubt as to some previous engineering figures which were issued as to the load limit to be used. This should be arrived at, posting should be done, and the load should be adjusted accordingly. Warehouse No. 1 - Some shelving has large heavy items such as large valves stored on upper levels. It is recommended that these types of items be placed on the lowest level of shelves. This would not only remove the possibility of a heavy item dropping on someone but would allow for easier access to the materials. Warehouse No. 2 - Floors in this warehouse should be swept and maintained in cleaner condition. Some items are stored on upper level shelves in very unstable conditions. It is recommended that heavy items be stored on lower shelves for easier and safer handling. There are some palleted items which should be re-palleted and stacked in a safer manner. Welding - This area was found to be in good shape. Instrument Shop - This area was found in fairly good shape. CCR 000016546 Robert L. Lembke, M.D. September 26, 1975 Page Two Laboratory - This area has been improved. The First Aid room has been cleaned and painted. The exterior of the lower cabinets in this room should be washed and should be kept clean. The conditions in this plant are very good. Much effort is being made to keep working areas clean and safe. The people are to be commended for their interest shown. Emphasis must be made for a continuous effort in support for health in all phases of work in the plant since there will be an increased demand as the result of the standards making program in OSHA. The Medical Division should receive a copy of the summary of the Monthly Monitoring Results.
