The Bendix Area Monitoring System shutdown completely four (4) times during October for unknown reasons. Since a voltage upset was suspected as a possible cause of the mal function, a recorder is being used to monitor the power supply. 2. Ihe gas chromatograph for TCE and VAM monitoring will be put to other uses in the future. The failure of the system to function as predicted and a greatly reduced need for the monitoring lead to the decision to abandon the GC for copolymer monitoring. 3. The FPA Coordinator will attend Century OVA training sessions on Dec ember 10th and 11th. Equipment ''on-site" repairs remain high. Two units were returned to the manufacturer for complete overhaul. 4. The annual fire equipment testing and repair has been completed. 5. Hnu maintenance retrained high, but all problems were resolved at the plant and all units are operational. 6. VCM area monitoring levels were up somewhat during October with several 0SI1A points averaging over l.Oppm but less than 2.0ppm for the month. Several problems including VCM in the cooling water return sump outside Bldg. 1-W, overflow at Bldg. 7, reactor Weir boxes 7-E, leaking manhole covers, poor seal on slurrry transfer strainers all contributed to the increase in low level alarms. 7. EPA perimeter and off-site monitoring continued to be excellent with no levels exceeding l.Oppm VCM and most readings were non-detectable. 8. Reactor Opening Loss still failed to read 100C? compliance, but an inprovement was made through vacuum pump efficiency upgrading and higher temp erature test levels (150F). 9. The new EPA Technician hired to replace the vacancy left by the promotion of D. Picard and the subsequent personnel realignment is still pending. Projects A. Vinyl Chloride Exposure 1. Special area testing will resume as manpower permits. 2. A conplete fire protection system audit took place. A report was issued by the insurance company. A reply will be made as soon as the report is received by the Safety Engineer. 3. A dust monitoring program was studied. Corporate assistance and more sophisticated testing will be done in January. B. Noise Surveys 1. Dosimeter monitoring will continue on a limited basis in Noverrtoer. Full scale monitoring will begin when equipment is in full repair and nanpower requirements are satisfied. C.
