statement This new annual case covers research and investigations regarding levels of potential exposure to harmful substances and conditions by Bell System Employees in performing their assigned duties and by customers in their association with company equipment and service. The broad goals of this case are:
1- Explore, define and evaluate the potential health hazards associated with Bell System operations and Technical developments.
2. Increase awareness in the Bell System of known and
potential health hazards thereby bringing about a safer and more healthful work environment.
3- Make recommendations to appropriate Bell System Company departments regarding conclusions on proposed standards and other health issues involving Bell System operations.
4. Provide Bell System responses to the Government and its advisory committees on proposed health standards, to in sure that promulgated standards represent the best scientific and medical evidence available, marshalled into practical and usable standards.

30 Exposure to Asbestos Fibers:
A comprehensive study will be made of the Bell System use of asbestos as well as employee exposures to asbestos fibers. The study will include situations where there may be inadvertent exposure to asbestos fibers such as the possible release of fibers from the interior portions of air plenums which have been sprayed with asbestos in sulating materials.
The ubiquitous nature of asbestos as well as its potential for producing lung pathology vie, mesothelioma and lung cancer, have received a high degree of notoriety in recent years. Although a permanent federal standard promulgated --- by OSHA has been in effect since July 7 , 1972, * no comprehensive effort has been made to determine compliance with this standard. Two perfunctory studies have been made of asbestos fiber concentrations associated with the drilling of ebony power board in a simulated central office and air circulated through asbestos lined plenums in various office buildings. No evaluation has been made of the cutting or drilling of tra.nsite materials.
The study will involve the cooperation of construction, maintenance, and safety personnel in a selected number of telephone companies.
