Lindbergh Blvd. St. Louis, Missouri 63166 Dear Elmer: In connection with the chicken residue studies with the Aroclors and related materials, we would suggest the following approach: 1. Determine the approximate LD^q or MLD for each of the materials in chickens - Cost $125 per material or $1,000 for eight materials. 2. 7-day feeding study - We would administer approximately 1/5 of the MLD using four young adult hens for each material. The test material would be administered daily for seven consecutive days with sacrifice on day 8. Birds would be defeathered and eviscerated. Intestines, liver, lung, heart and spleen of each bird would be packaged separately. Samples of fat for each group would be pooled. Carcass, feathers, organs and fat would be sub mitted to Monsanto for analysis. The cost of these studies would be $160 per material. We believe that preliminary determination of acute toxicity in the species to be studied is important not only for selecting dose levels for this study but also for determining appropriate dose levels for the more extensive chicken studies to be done later. We do not see the necessity of running two dose levels since this is not a real toxicology study. The purpose here is to determine the extent and site of accumulation of the chlorinated hydrocarbons.
