For the proposed Workshop on EA, we have proposed that Tom taking a lead and incorporating with other researchers' joint-efforts from both US and China sides. Following are some of my additional thoughts that triggered by Tom and Rob's mails, and the telephone conversation with Tom and Yimei last night. Rationale and purpose. The workshop is aimed at bringing people with both the 'renewed' strategy and methodology of EA based on our case situation which is recognized as: 1) small crude Bn exposure rate (7-8% of the totalled -4000 subjects investigated); 2) insufficient and inconsistent historical exposure database that might frustrate a reliable quantitative EA; 3) diverse and widespread industries involved that have been tremendously changing in working conditions, production processes, and materials used with the economic reform approaches performed and the economy growth. Of these, might have gone beyond our original thoughts and designed philosophy of EA (Tom might not fully agree with my judgement !?); and explain why we need such a workshop. Proposed topics. As for the main topics of the exposure assessment process, that need to be covered in the workshop, should be further discussed with Tom, Rob, Xibiao, Yimei and approved by Drs. Richard Irons and Hua Fu. To my knowledge, 1) the "sector analysis" that Tom and Yimei have proposed; 2) the construction of occupation and job/task exposure matrix even if the quantitative data are not really available in our case; and 3) the use of occupation and industry classification and the unification of coding system, as well as other practical guidelines, might be of worthwhile for the consideration. Participant and duration. EA team workers from Fudan (e.g., Yang, Jin, Liang, Xibiao, Fang, Huang, Ni, xiao Fu, xiao Chen, He, Zhu; xiao Wu-from Dept OH) and the municipal IPHS (Zhu Jun and SR Zhu ) would be the basic

participants of the workshop. I believe most of these people have been trained in OH and IH during their university career training, and in Tom courses previously offered, however: 1) how to approach the basic knowledge and theory into a realistic practice based on our case examples might still need a "gap bridging" and drilling process; 2) there are some newly recruited team workers, say, xiao Chen, xiao Fu, etc, to whom an initial training might even be needed; and 3) some parts of our original strategic approaches might need to be updated and modified, that should be considered as a refresh and progressive event, and in no means of offensive to anybody, agree? The proposed duration of the workshop will be 1-2 days depending on how many topics and scopes that you do agree to be necessarily covered. Personally, I would prefer to have a 2 day-course which includes the theoretical lectures and the practice. Dates. To me, either early July (being proposed at the Conference Call), the eve of the summer vacation, may be too hasty; or early September, the beginning of the new semester, everyone will be full of energy as being relaxing from a 50-day long vacation. The above-mentioned issues are mostly questioned by Tom. I am not sure whether my answers are really relevant. Looking forward to you all comments. Dear Rob: Thank you very much for sharing me your message.

As you may be informed, we had a Conference Call with API (Drs. Jarnot Bruce, Tsai, etc) on 2005-6-8. Prof. Fu and Xibiao are going to send you the Minute of the Call sooner. We have made a proposal for a Joint-Mini Workshop on Exposure Assessment, hopefully in early July this year wondering if Tom and you could take a lead and incorporated with the joint-efforts of researchers from both sides to make it happen and constructive success.
