Although this location was specifically directed to replace the wiping pads with newer models, this situation may exist throughout the US. This correspondence serves as informational. Please share this information with all NS locations which may utilize these wiping pads. Doug Zabrin informed NARO that these asbestos wiping pads were discontinued and scheduled for replacement in 1977. A notice was distributed by Zabrin in July o f 1992 indicating that some o f the asbestos wiping pads may still be in existence and must be replaced immediately. This notice is attached for your information. The old asbestos soldering wiping pads are model R2973, the piece part number is P469513. Unfortunately, the replacement piece part has the same number. Please ensure that all soldering irons are utilizing the newer foam wiping pads as opposed to the older R-2973 asbestos wiping pads.
