A Complete Packing Service
Since 1887 The Carlock Packing Company has supplied its products to. and served industry throughout the civilized world. The Company's familiar caliper-and-scale trade mark and the registered name garlock. which identify all mechanical packings and allied products man ufactured by Carlock. are trusted emblems around the globe.
Xo single catalog could properly describe all the hundreds of types and styles of Garlock products. This book, therefore, contains only those Carlock materials for which there is general usage and demand. By referring to the text and to the recommendation table on page 11, the user of this catalog generally can select a Garlock product satisfactory for any ordinary application.
If. however, special equipment is being used or operating conditions are unusual no product described in this catalog may exactly suit the requirements. To take care of such unusual conditions a comprehensive line o( special Carlock materials has been developed and is avail able to the packing user. These hundreds of special products are not included in this catalog.
All Garlock representatives, however, are fully conversant with these many special materials and are fully qualified by training and experience to determine which Garlock product is most suitable for any condition. The services of this corps of competent Garlock representatives are available to packing users everywhere.
If, following a survey by a Garlock representative, it is determined that a suitable material is not available either in the line of Garlock standard or special products, an entirely new product will be developed for the job. Garlock's modern laboratories and test departments arc com pletely equipped and staffed for such work and are devoted exclusively to the development and improvement of packing materials.

How to Order Garlock Packings
This catalog has been designed to make the selec tion and ordering of Garlock product? as easy and as simple as possible and it is hoped that it will serve the user as a practical packing guide. The recommendation tables on page 11 should be ol assistance in selecting, from the many items con tained in catalog, the proper packing for each job.
The Company's experience over the years, how ever, has proved that no packing catalog can an swer all the questions or solve all the complex pack ing problems of present day industrial plants and that individual study of the equipment and serv ice conditions frequently is necessary before the * proper packing can be intelligently selected. To that end Garlock maintains sales offices and ware houses in important industrial centers (see paged) to which are attached staffs of trained, competent
and practical representatives, always available for consultation on any packing or gasket problem-- without charge or obligation to the packing user.
In recommending a packing for any job the Garlock representative is not limited with respect to the material from which the packing is made but is entirely free to select the material which, in his opinion, is the best for that particular installation. He may select a packing made of asbestos, rubber, synthetic, flax, cotton, rayon. leather or metal or of a combination of those or other materials, all of which are processed into finished products in the Garlock factories.The Garlock representative's only interest in recommending one material in preference to another, therefore, is to provide the packing user with the best product for the appli cation under consideration.
Cut. formed or molded gaskets are available in any commercial i size or shape, fabricated to the customer's specifications.
HOOD GASKETS
Specify the Gsriork itvle num ber. the inside diameter, the outside diameter, the thickness and the number of pasketa re quired. tf paskets are to be with Imlt holes specify the number and size of bolt hole* and the diameter of bolt circle or sup ply a drawinp or template.
OVAL OR FLATSIDED GASKETS
Specify the Carlock style num ber. the lone and short inside diameters, the radii, the width of fiance or rind, the thirknesa and the number of pasketa re quired. Drawinps or templates are desirable.

Specify the Garlock style num ber. the inside dimension, the width of Banpe or rind, the thickness and the number of caskets required. Then paskets with munded corners are re quired the radii must be spec ified nr drawmps or templates furnished.

ConMiruction--These rings are con structed of plies of closely-woven, heavy cotton duck, treated with a special Garlock rubber compound and finished with thick lop and bottom covers of rubber. They are treated with a mineral oil lubricant and externally graphited.
Each ring is individually cut into a male' and female part (as illustrated). These twopiece rings are semi-automatic in action and operate with very light gland pressure. They usually are installed in combination with plain-cut rings (such as style 333). Forma--Garlock 336 Scctional-cut and Oarlock 530 Diagonal-cut Rings are sup plied to specified rod and stuffing box dimensions and are regularly furnished with bevel-cut joint. The minimum packing space lor which these rings can be furnished is s" for Garlock 336 and for Garlock 550.

How Garlock LATTICE BRAID* Packing Differs from
Ordinary Braided Packing
LATTICE BRAID In Garlock LATTICE BRAID pack ing every braiding strand passes diagonally through the body of the packing at an angle of approxi mately 45. This makes a com pletely unified structure. It is braided internally as well as exter nally. Every braided strand con tributes to the strength of the entire mass. `LATTICE BRAID is a trade-mark of the Garlock Packing Company.
Ordinary square or flax braid In square braided packings each strand merely passes over and under other strands running in the opposite general direction. No strands pass entirely through the packing. No single strand is linked with all the other strands. There is no unified structure as in LATTICE BRAID packing.
Ordinary round or braid-over-braid In the braid-over-braid method (sometimes called cover-on-cover) the packing is built-up to the re quired size bv braiding one or more covers around a center core. Each cover is entirely separate from the core and the other covers. With no structural bond the finished material is far from an integral unit. 38

Depending on pressures, clearances, application and surrounding condi tions it may be desirable to change depth and, or radial width of the CHEVRON', but because of many variables in the applications, no definite formula is possible. In general it may be stated that the greater the clearances or relative movement of the machine components the greater the radial width should be.
On low pressures or positive seal applications when drift is undesirable, consideration should be given to the use of a homogeneous ring such as style 7815 or style 8452 as a bottom ring in a fabric set.
At pressures above 3000 p.s.i. it is frequently desirable, depending upon surrounding conditions, to provide means of properly supporting the CHEVRON rings to prevent undue distortion. Metal separators between the CHEVRON rings (see pg. 51) and the use of "D" fillers serve the purpose of preventing distortion and also help prevent over-tightening of the packing by a mechanic, while still preserving the automatic action of the "hinge" of the CHEVRON ring. On cut open rings the "D" filler prevents spiraling of the liquid from ring to ring, as in the Garlock CHEVRON the rings nest within themselves, and the only path for oil to pass around the rings w'ould normally be through the "hinge". On many applications using cut open rings this may be important.
Adapters--Adapters are usually of the same material as the CHEVRON unless other factors dictate another material. Available adapter materials are fabric reinforced rubbers, both flexible and rockhard: fabric rein forced phenolic; metals, plastics including Teflon and Kel-F. Basically the adapters are solely to support the packing properly. In some applications they mav be made extra deep to provide additional bearing support.
Metal adapters or metal separators usually increase the stack heights.
Operation and Initiallalion of Chevron Parking--CHEN RON o|mT-

Cylinder*: Cylinder bores should be a maximum of plus or minus .005 nominal size. Generally variations from these figures may result in reduced efficiency.
Piston*: Pistons should be as close to cylinder bore as possible. With rockhard adapters the diametrical clearance may be increased, but this depends on pressures, piston size, concentricity of cylinder, shock loading etc. Pistons should be independently supported and the packing backed up to as near cylinder size as possible. Where considerable piston clearance is used rockhard. phenolic, plastic or metal end rings are desirable: the particular choice is usually dictated by pressure con siderations.
Packing Support--One of the very important considerations is the proper support of the packing set. The clearance between metal parts (moving rs. stationary') that back up the CHEVRON should be as small as machine shop practice economically allows. The type of adapters to use will depend on pressure, bearings, extension of ram, machined tolerances, backup support, etc.

Leaks iu bolted flange joints gasketed with Hat gas kets frequently are caused by insufficient bolt pres sure. It i- important, therefore. to employ sufficient
bolls of ample size. In determining the number and size of bolts a sale rule is to provide a residual unit gasket load equal to five to ten times the internal pres
sure after deducting the relieving effect of the internal pressure.
The gasket used on a bolted joint should have a flange sufficiently wide to support the original bolt
load before deductine for the internal pressure. Crush
ing strength ot gaskets varies with temperatures, cas
ket thickness and gasket material. Upon receipt of
complete data relating to any specific application we
will supply approximate values for the crushim: strength
o| gaskets therefor.

ness of a gasket is related in a considerable dearee to
the friction between the Hanses and the gasket. Hiaher
compressions at all loads usually are obtained if the

Construrt ion--Oarlock GUARDIAN Gasket? are constructed of -spirallv wound strips ill steel alternate! with a.-besto* paper. Tvpe 304 stainless -teel is used in standard construction. However, cold rolled steel or 316 stainless steel is available when specified. The inner and outer edges of the gasket are reinturced with a Jouble layer of steel and electrically spot welded.
The metal strip used in GUARDIAN Gaskets is formed in a cross sectional shape resembling the letter V. This structural design imparts unusual resiliency and re* bound to the gasket. Form--Garlock GUARDIAN Gaskets are made in round, oval, square, diamond and other shapes, fabricated, to the customer's specifications. These gaskets are not made with bolt holes or in shapes with re-entrant angles.
Standard size* and thicknesses for various pipe joints and boiler plates are available on request. Tenuring King -- \\ lien -n ordered these gaskets are supplied with an attached steel centering ring of the proper diameter to fit inside the bolts ol a Hanged pipe joint. This arrangement is advantageous on mam applications. For example, when gaskets are to be applied to raised face Ranges the cen tering ring insures correct location of the gasket in the joint. GUARDIAN Gaskets are also available with an integral wire centering guide which fits over opposite bolts and assures quick, accurate center ing of the gasket between the flanges.

Packing Cups
Garlock Molded Packing Cups are made in many types and styles, each designed and constructed for a specific service condition.
Various fabrics, combined or frictioned with one of many special Garlock compounds made of rubber or synthetic rubber, are used in the manufacture of these cups. The selection of the type of fabric and type of compound depends on the nature of the service in which the cup is to be used.
Garlock cups are used on equipment operating against air at high or low pres* sure*. against oils and on heavy duty hy draulic equipment. Some of the most commoulv used styles are:
Garlock 813-A, which is made of as bestos cloth and an oil-resisting syn thetic rubber binder, for service against air at atmospheric temperature and medium pressures where high resistance to oil is required. Garlock 7131, which is made of a fine
cotton fabric frictioned with an oil-, resisting synthetic rubber binder. A good cup for use against mineral oils, greases or air at atmospheric tempera ture on hydraulic cylinder applications.
Garlock 8619. which is made of me dium weight cotton duck frictioned with a synthetic rubber binder. This cup is recommended for use against water or air at atmospheric tempera ture and medium to high pressures.
Carlock 8619-RH. which is the Carlock 8619 cup with a rockhard cure, for use against hot and cold water, cold min eral oil and grease at high pressures.
Garlock Molded Cups are made in many different sizes ranging from less than Vi diameter up to very large cylinder sizes.

For high pressures and elevated tern-
peratures hard valves generally are re
quired and for pressures and temperatures in the lower brackets softer valves usually are the most suitable. In determining the proper hardness of a pump valve for a; spe cific application, however, consideration should also be given to the diameter and thickness of the valve itself and to the nature of the liquid handled by the pump.
From the data on the following pages it should be possible to select a suitable valve for almost any service condition. However, if there is any doubt as to the proper valve to use it is recommended that a Carlock Representative be consulted. If incon venient to have a survey of the equipment and surrounding operating conditions made by our representative a specific recommen dation will be made by mail or telephone upon receipt of information as to the diam eter and thickness of the valve and size of the hole; the nature and temperature of the liquid; and the pressure against the valve.

These lead rings generally are applied in combination with plain fibre rings. ^ hen ferrules are used two lead rings separated by a fibre ring usually are employed: when ferrules are not used two lead rings and two fibre rings, arranged alternately, generally are installed.

Garlock 1002 Condenser Tube Packing Rings are made <>f high grade fibre with lead slue insert. The lead insert in these riots provides the metallic connection required between the condenser tube and tube sheet to prevent electrolytic corrosion of the tubes. Rings of this type, therefore, com monly are installed alone and not in com bination w ith rings of any other type.

Garlock Leather Hydrant Valves are usually made of oak leather but are also available in chrome leather or in the exclusive Bitan leather described on page 70.
Leather hydrant valves are produced for
practically all makes of standard hydrants the only exceptions being those few types requiring valves of odd shapes xvhich obviously could not readily be made of leather.

Garlock 9166 is a plastic packing made of shredded 'Teflon," graphite and a syn thetic. hydro-carbon binder--also available with the binder omitted: the graphite omitted: or with both the binder and graph ite omitted.
Garlock 9166 is available both in coil and ring forms in sizes shown in the tables. All coil sizes, except size "OX." are regularly supplied with a skeleton braided jacket of Teflon" filament. Rings are die-formed and are furnished solid unless cut-open rings are specified.

The following Garlock LATTICE BRAID Packings are made by the patented process described on page 38.
Garlock .5733 is made of "Teflon" fila ment. untreated. Garlock 5861 is made from long-fibre Canadian asbestos varn treated with `Teflon'' -uspcii'oid.
Garlock 5880 is made of pure, blue Cape asbestos yarn treated with 'Tef lon" suspensoid. These packings are available both in coil form and in ring form in packing sizes from 1 j" up. Rings are made cut-open with a square joint unless otherwise specified.

GARLOCK PACKAGE SEAL

The Garlock Package Seal consists of a flexible bellows made of synthetic rubber, a spring and washer and a carbon or metal seal ring, all contained in a metal case which rotates with the shaft. A ceramic or metal stationary seat, combined with a soft rub ber vibration ring, completes the assembly.
Package seals of standard construction are supplied with brass case, brass washer, stainless steel spring, and Buna-N rubber bellows. The stationary seat is to be specified. These metal parts can be furnished of 316 ss.
Garlock Package Seals are made for shaft sizes from 3/$" to 3*.
CARLOfK CIIEVIIOA SEALS
Garlock CHEVRON Mechanipak Seals, designated as Type C, are furnished with -iugle spring or multiple spring. These seals arc supplied for packing spaces V3' and larger.

Gasket Gutter-Set B
The Carlock Casket Cutter is a sturdy, high-grade, zinc plated steel tool for cutting round gaskets quickly, easily and accu rately from asbestos, rubber, fibre or cork sheets. ` The ir'a" hex shaped bar accommodates knife holder and point holder which are adjustable on the shaft to cut gaskets any size from 114" to 2214" outside diameters. By turning knife in hole 180 slight angle changes can then be made to improve the cut in different materials. Larger gaskets can be cut by mounting knife and point holders on longer K* hex or ti" round bar.
Complete set includes extra knife and steel centering point. The tool can be used for scribing and layout work by mounting both points in holders.

Oarlock Compound No. 1 is a gasket paste for application to gaskets on flanged joints operating against steam, water, hot or cold oils or solvents. This compound helps to make a tight joint and facilitate? the breaking of the joint. It does not discolor liquids, requires no thinning and will not ferment in storage.

COMPOI NO NO. 2
Garlock No. 2 Lubricating Compound is a special paste containing graphite developed in the Garlock laboratories for use w ith rod or plunger packings operating against steam, hot or cold water or aqueous solutions. It has a high lubricating value, maintains proper viscosity under heat and is a rust and corrosion preventive.
The efficiency and serviceable life of packing may be greatly increased by coatingqhe packing with Garlock No. 2 compound at the time of instal lation and by making subsequent applications regularly, either through a pressure fitting or by swabbing the rod.
Carlock No. 2 compound is regularly packaged in 20-ounce. 5-pound and 10-pound cans and is available in large containers for bulk users.

Garlock No. 3 Lubricating Compound was developed in the Garlock labo ratories for use with rod or plunger packings, operating against oils, gasoline, solvents and vapors or chemicals of an oily nature. It has a high lubricating value and its usage retards or prevents seepage through the packing and makes leakproof operation possible without excessive gland pressure.
The serviceable life of packings may be greatly increased by applying Garlock No. 3 Compound to the packing at the time it is installed and by making subsequent applications at regular intervals, either through a pressure fitting or by swabbing the rod.
Garlock No. 3 Compound is regularly packaged in 20-ounce. 5-pound and 10-pound cans and is available in large containers for bulk users.
CRANDALL LUBALL* LUBRICANT
Crandall LUBALL lubricant is sold exclusively by The Garlock Packing Company. It is for use with rod or plunger packings operating against steam, hot or cold water or aqueous solutions at temperatures up to 500 F. This material, containing no graphite, has a high lubricating value and will not corrode chromium steel rods.
The serviceable life of packings may be increased by applying LUBALL lubricant to the packing when it is installed and by making subsequent applications either through a pressure fitting or a grease cup with a lantern ring.

Garlock Sealing Compound k 101
Garlock No. 101 Sealing Compound is a non-hardening plastic material developed for the following uses: 1. With gaskets on Hanged joints where the flanges are rough or pitted. 2. For making temporary repairs to gasketed joints, where pressures are
low. 3. For sealing the seams or joints between light metal surfaces where
gaskets cannot be applied. 4. For making temporary joints between bolted flanges without using
gaskets, where pressures are low. 5. As a substitute for Garlock Pipe Thread Compound on threaded joints
when regular pipe thread compound is not immediately available. Garlock No. 101 Compound is recommended for use at temperatures ranging from below zero up to 500 F., on pipe lines or other equipment handling: Steam Water Air Oil Gasoline Gas Weak Adds Alkalies. Garlock Sealing Compound No. 101 is packaged in collapsible metal tubes of ttvo convenient sizes containing, respectively, 2 ounces and 8 ounces of compound, liquid measure.
Garlock Tapping Compound is a development of the Garlock laboratories. It is an all-purpose compound for use in metal machining operations. Its use reduces amount of torque required, permits higher speeds in metal machining operations, reduces tool breakage and reduces work spoilage.
Garlock Tapping Compound is packaged in 1-pound and 2-pound cans and is also available in large containers for bulk users.

Garlock Solid-cap Metal Packings
Garlock 875,821 and 835 arc floating metal packings of solid-cup design consisting of a varying number of sections of segmental packing rings depending upon conditions and pressures encoun tered. Each may or may not be supplied with auxiliary stuffing box in the flange depending upon the service encountered.
Garlock 875 is designed for gas compressor service.
Garlock 821 is designed for piston rod packing on vertical engines and marine engines.
Garlock 835 is designed and recommended for service on ammonia or freon reciprocating refrigeration compressors.
The basic design of these packings is the same.
For intermittent service, propane, wet gas. or where gas saving is essential, we recommend an auxiliary stuffing box be used in conjunction with the metal packing. Because floating metal packing will not completely seal a static pressure, the auxiliary* -stuffing box is packed with a fibrous packing (such as Garlock CHEVRON packing).

Garlock 806 solid-cup metal packing is designed for installation outside the stuffing box. It is for use on piston rods and valve stems where there is no objection to disconnecting the rod in order to apply the packing.

Garlock 805. 808. 809 and 861 are melal packings of split-case design consisting of a varying number of sections of segmental pack ing rings depending on the conditions "and pressures encountered. Each can be applied or removed without disconnecting the rod of

Garlock 865. 808. 809. and 861 are designed for use on piston rods and valve stems of steam engines, air or gas compressors, and steam-driven pumps.

Garlock 805 is designed to be applied outside of the Muffins box and bolted to the face of the stuffinc box with a hub which fits into the stuffing box. If the stuff ing box gland is to be left on. it can be bolted against the face of the stuffing box with a gasket between Range and face of stuffing box and a Garlock 805 case without hub will be furnished. This packing is gasketed between the bottom of the case and the face of the -luffing box or flanxe. (Fig. 1)

Garlock 861 is designed with the body of the case fitting into the stuffin' box and with an integral flange, drilled, to bolt to the lace of the stuffing box making it unnecessary to furnish a packing gland.
