PONTCHARTRAIN G. B . HASkxNSON, LOUISVIl, VENDOR HAZARD NOTIFICATION OFF-PLANT EQUIPMENT REPAIR In a recent meeting with L. R. Gillette of the Houston Regional Office and D. Collin of the Ohio Valley Regional Office, they expressed concern (prompted by several incidents) about the need to notify vendors of the potential for hazardous exposure when equipment is sent off the plant for repair that has been in service on hazardous materials. Although the contracts with vendors . have statements alerting the vendor to the potential for hazards, there is normally no hazard information attached to the contract. The releases are very often made directly to the vendor by the plant against the contract, and E&M is not in a position to ade quately monitor these transactions. It is proposed for your consideration and comment that all equipment sent off the plant for repair that has been in service on hazardous materials, be accompanied by information (e.g., a Safety Data Sheet) on the hazards associated with the material the equipment was in service on. This would be done even though the equipment had been cleared, because on several occasions we have turned equipment over to vendors that we felt was cleared, and for one reason or another (undrainable low point, unknown pluggage, etc.), resulted in vendor exposure.
