NJ0809001 Results of PFOA and PFOS Analysis April 2: 2007 0' On February 9,2007, representatives of the New Jersey Department of Environrnen~al Protection, Bureau of Safe h-nking Water (NJDEP- BSDW) collected samples at your facility. The samples were collected as part of a study to determine the general occurrence of Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) in wells and surface waters, which are a source of drinking water, throughout the State. Raw water samples were collected at WL001004 (Well #2B . Ranney wellfield), WL001005 (Well #3A Rmney wellfield) and WL002009 (Well #2 - 1,aylon wellfield). STL Laboratories in Denver Colorado analyzed the sample for PFOA and PFOS (Perfluorooctanoic Sulfonate). This laboratcry is certified for the conduct of these measurements by NJDEP. The results of the analysis from your facility showed the following: WLOO1004 Well #2B Compound Concexration (uub*1 PFOA 0.066 PFOS 0.0026 J WL001005. Well # 3 k Com~ound Concentration (pub*) PFOA 0.037 PFOS 0.0025 J WL002009, Wel.1 #2 Comvound Concentration (ppb* PFOA 0.083 PFOS 0.0029 J *- In terms of concentration ppb refers to parts per billion J- Estimated value The results of a trip bIank conducted along with these samples was non detectable for both parameters. On February 13,2007 NJDEP released the results of a study that evaluated the occurrence of PFOA in drinking-water systems throughout the state. The study showed very low levels in wells throughout New Jersey, consistent with levels found in your system and other areas of the country. DEP also has also developed a preliminary drinking water guidance value for PFOA of 0.04 ppb. The new guidance level is the fxst phase of an ongoing process that could establish a drinking-water standard for this contaminant. As the science regarding PFOA is developing rapidly, NJDEP wiIl continue lo conduct sampling and evaluale data from all sources as it becomes available- NJDEP is not recommending a change in consumption patterns based on the new information. The data collected from your facility will be used 10 determine the extent of future monitoring and regulation of these substances in drinking water.
