In this Issue of Plasticizer Patter, I want to pass on a few additional comments on coatings-and also several statements which relate to the adhesives and -sealants industry, . - - I should also say at this point that the last Specialist referred to above really should have been published as a Plasticizer Patter. The Information contained In that issue which related to specific reformulations by customers should definitely be kept on a confidential basis and should be for the use of the salesman only. Coatings Highlights . - Pioneer Paint Products [Len Berllk) - Reports that a blend of Aroclor bOb2 and Aroclor 54bd is being used in an acrylic coating to replace 1254. The Aroclor is being used to pro mote gloss as well as providing general plasticization. Jordan Paint Company (Len Berllk) - A very small paint formulator~ Has replaced Aroclor 1254 with straight 5460. Depending on their resin, this could be all right, however, we would expect a somewhat brittle coating. A 60$ blend of Aroclor 5460 and 40# Chlorowax 40 resulted In primer failure and failure In the salt water immersion test. ICI chlorinated paraffins gave a softer coating than the Aroclors and provided less chemical resistance. Adhesives and Sealants Highlights Illinois Adhesives (Len Berllk) - Has now approved Aroclor 5432 to be used as a replacement for Aroclor 1254 in their alkali dispersible hot melt adhesive formulation. They are pursuing adhesive formulations wijth low color Aroclor 5460. Nashua - Dutch Brands Division (Len Berllk) - Has now success fully completed a large scale plant trial of their new Santi- clzer 885/Aroclor 1221 adhesive blend. Pull scale manufacture will .begin shortly. Aroclor 5460 is now the prime candidate for replacement of Aroclor 1268 in their pressure sensitive formulation. ' . H. B. Fuller Company (Len Berllk) - Has approved Aroclor 6062 in several epoxy and polysulflde based products. They have stated that Aroclor 6062 Improves adhesion over Aroclor 1254 in an epoxy/alumlnum system. W. R. Grace (John Gannon) - Is strongly leaning toward a blend of Santlclzer ibl/Aroclor 5460 in a 40/60 ratio to replace Aroclor 1254. Thlokol (Jan Smoke) - While they had previously reported that santlclzer 2bl had the inside track as a replacement product for Aroclor 1254, their most recent statements imply some problems with Santlclzer 26l. They continue to evaluate this material along with a variety of other plasticizers from competition. They have not evaluated Santlclzer 26l/Aroclor 5460 blends which we believe will get around most of their problems. We will try to get Qbimi TOWOLDMON0006363 WATER_PCB-00002873 some competitive data published on Santiclser 26l/Aroclor 5460 blends as soon as possible. ..Miscellaneous - Some few samples of a developmental product, called Aroclor 5465 have been and are be'ing'sent to hot melt adhesive customers for evaluation.
