Environmental Science Curriculum Advisory Committee (Summary of Committee Meeting Activities) The Environmental Science Curriculum Advisory Committee met at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 18, 1994, Char's Restaurant located in Collinsville, Illinois. Companies represented were Chemical Waste Management, Monsanto, Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and Laclede Steel Company. Attached is a complete listing of the Environmental Science Curriculum Advisory Committee. The fine tuning of the course load for students interested in Environmental Science was discussed. Individuals stated the need to make sure students acquired skills in the three facets of environmental testing. It was said that students should have a general understanding of soil, water and air testing procedures. It was also agreed that Earth Science be added to the curriculum and should be one of the first courses students take in the program. The committee further suggested that a curriculum be developed which serves a dual purpose. For example, some students may not want to complete a four year program; however, they may want to use their early acquired skills in the work place. Two course outlings were submitted by Russ Sacket of Monsanto Company and one was submitted by David Fulbright of Laclede Steel Company for the committee's review. SW 136102 STLCOPCB4036071 Summary Tuesday, January 18, 1994 Page Two Terry Lewis, State Community College, Pat McCarthy, Illinois EPA, and David Fulbright of Laclede Steel Company are scheduled to meet in order to complete the course outline for the Environmental Regulations course. Additional discussions centered around the development of a program which includes certification in various areas, i.e.. Health and Safety certificate programs. Such programs will enable students to begin work in the field with an associate's degree. Other students may want to complete a bachelor's degree and would have the option to do so. Committee members also discussed allowing students to perform as interns within their companies; consequently, giving students on-the-job training and better preparing them for future employment. Some members of the committee are also willing to assist in classroom instruction. In an effort to effectively plan future meetings, it was suggested that meetings occur on the third Wednesday of every month at 11:00 a.m. All committee members are asked to inform the chairman if there is a conflict with scheduling.
