Gentlemen: The next meeting of the SPI Food, Drug and Cosmetic Packaging Materials Committee will take place at the Shoreham-Americana Hotel, 2500 Calvert Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008, beginning promptly at 9:00 a.m. We wish to state at the very outset that the room situation at the ShorehamAmericana that week is relatively tight, and Reservations there would like to learn by no later than January 3rd about your requirements for sleeping room accommodations the previous evening. Therefore, would you please contact the Shoreham-Americana immediately, making certain to indicate that your request is in connection with a meeting of The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc., or if you wish, our call letters SPI. A review of the attached detailed three-page agenda for our meeting reflects the multiplicity of varied topics that are to be discussed during our next business session. The subjects to be reported on, coupled with the fact that it has been some time since we have had a full-dress meeting of the Committee, certainly points up the importance of the January 22nd business session. In view of the fact that there are more Items on the agenda than heretofore, each person shown as delivering a report must bring a written report in order to expedite a discussion of each item on the agenda and, further, to ease the Secretary's preparation of the minutes. The United States Department of Agriculture has prepared a comprehensive guide to the compound evaluation program of the USDA. This publication, "Guidelines for Obtaining Authorization of Compounds to be Used in Meat and Poultry Plants", can be obtained from the United States Department of Agriculture APHIS; Meat and Poultry Inspection Program, Building 306, Agricultural Research Center, Beltsville, Md. 20705. The new procedure mandates the use of special application forms beginning January 1, 1975. You may obtain copies of the forms at the above address. In addition to the notification, we are enclosing a copy of MP Form 5 which can be used to order the appropriate application forms. In addition to contacting Reservations at the Hotel immediately, please return the appropriate form at the very end of this file indicating whether you will be present at the meeting. In an effort to facilitate application for the authorization of preparations to be used in federally inspected meat and poultry plants, the Compound Evaluation Laboratory has prepared forms to be used for that purpose. * BACK TO THE FORMS IN A MINUTE ... We realize that, in order to have the Forms accomplish the desired purpose, applicants must b? aware of more details of the evaluation process than have been available in the past. Therefore, we have also prepared a booklet to provide a comprehensive guide to the compound evaluation program of the USDA. A copy of that publication, entitled "Guidelines For Obtaining Authorization Of Compounds To Be Used In Meat And Poultry Plants," is enclosed for your use. As you read the booklet, you will find some significant changes in policy concerning the use of various types of compounds. You will also notice that some of the information in it has been provided previously in our publication "List of Chemical Compounds;" but not in as great detail. The issuance of this booklet will allow us to remove that information from the "List of Chemical Compounds," leaving only that information pertinent to the listing of authorized compounds. IMPORTANT 111 It is important that you retain this copy of the "Guidelines For Obtaining Authorization ..." It is the only one which will be issued to you. iAs changes in policy or regulations which affect the publicationoccur, looseleaf pages will be issued to you for insertion in your copy. Also, you will be notified of errors or omissions in applications which you submit by reference to a specific section of the Guidelines. NOW ... BACK TO THE FORMS ... Since we do not know which application forms you will need or how many, we are not providing actual forms at this time. A reproduction of the forms along with a brief description of each is provided in Section 4.1 of the Guidelines. Don't worry about how to fill them out. Detailed instructions are provided on the back of each form.
