National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell said on Saturday that President Donald Trump had demonstrated a "unfortunate lack of respect" for the league and its players by suggesting that team owners should get rid of players who disrespect the flag.
"Divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for our great game and all of our players, and a failure to understand the overwhelming force for good our clubs and players represent in our communities," Goodell said in a statement, which not did not explicitly mention the president.
The president was addressing the actions of NFL players who have protested during the national anthem, following the example of former San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Colin Kaepemick, who started the national anthem protests last season amid a wave of protests about police violence. "Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, 'get that son of a bitch off the field right now - he's fired, Trump said at a rally in Alabama for Sen. Luther Strange.
