BIOCHEMICAL DEGRADATION The biochemical degradation rate of the product Light Water FC-201 F (1% aqueous solution) was determined via the biochemical oxygen demand. This procedure does not only show the extent of the microbiological oxidative degradation of the organic compounds but allows statements about the degradation kinetics because of the corresponding graph (ait.: curve) progression. The chemical oxygen demand was used as calculating quantity with regard to the degradation rate, it was determined experimentally via the potassium dichromate method which can be used as a measure for the complete mineralisation of the product's organical substance (COD=11000 mg O j/I). If you use this value as the required oxygen quantity for a 100 % degradation, the biochemical degradation, expressed as BODs (250 mg O ^I), amounts to 56,8 %. As you can see from the attached graph on the biochemical degradation kinetics determined manometrically the biochemical oxidation is finished already halfways after four days. Diluted solutions of the product in concentrations of 1 and 10 weight percentage were applied to the sensitive inner skin of the ear and underneath one eyeSd of the animals. The results o f the experiments showed that no irritant effects could be detected on the skin treated with a/m solutions. Therefore, you can assume that skin irritations can be widely excluded during the use of the extinguishing agent The pH-vaiues of the solutions are of a magnitude of 8.1 to 8.4; in this range skin usually tolerates the solution without irritations. The examination of irritant effects regarding the eyes showed that only the 10% solution caused minor reddening of the eye's mucous membrane on the first experimental day; the irritation ended the following day.
