May 25, 1984 Vic Ashe With your concurrence I would like to assess the cost benefit of this approach. On the surface it looks very good and may even minimize the use of the wet method. If you're interested a field test can be arranged if you can volunteer somebody to work with us. Please advise. cc: J. Woods M.E. Davison ECB^atellite PJS Chron "PU P. J. Persons exposed to asbestos have an increased risk of developing lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma. Although the use of friable asbestos containing materials has virtually been eliminated in new construction, many existing buildings contain these materials, examples being: sprayed fireproofing on columns, decks and beams; sprayed thermal and acoustic insulation; pipe and boiler insulation. Most pipe and boiler insulation applied during the period 1925 to 1975 contains friable asbestos. This pipe insulation is more widespread than sprayed materials and it is of an age that requires maintenance or replacement. Stringent government regulations, safety hazards to employees and visible liability to employers have prompted many budding owners to remove all asbestos containing pipe insulation from their building or workplaces. Safe-T-Strip provides a cost and time saving breakthrough in this work. 1 COMPARISON OF METHODS OF REMOVAL Conventional Under existing or proposed regulations, removal of pipe insulation containing asbestos is an involved procedure. This is fylly justified by overwhelming evidence that aged and deteriorating insulation can cause higher fibre levels in the air, than the levels encountered in handling newer materials. The regulations are designed to meet the worst conditions. They require that: the work area be isolated with temporary framing and plastic sheeting. Frequently, the enclosed area must be maintained at a negative pressure. workers must wear disposable coveralls, expensive respirators and be supplied with shower facilities. all insulation must be saturated prior to removal to minimize dust. This is difficult with jacketed and/or multilayer insulation. air monitoring must be performed inside and out side of the work area. there must be multiple cleaning procedures prior to removing the enclosure. asbestos waste must be carefully disposed of in approved containers and in designated land fill sites. these precautions required by law are very time consuming and necessitate the disruption of normal building activities. This is often the greatest element of cost in removing the hazard. In addition, since specialized equipment and trai ning are required, even minor pipe removal jobs require a specialist contractor. Safe-T-Strip effect ively solves these problems. SAFc-w-Su^iP The Cost-Effective Solution Safe-T-Strip has been developed to provide a safe method of removing potentially hazardous pipe insulation without incurring the inconvenience and costly requirements of conventional methods. Safe-T-Strip is a clear heavy gauge polyvinyl chloride (PVC) zippered shroud or bag which isolates the insulation to be removed. Capacity varies by pipe size and thickness, but in the smaller sizes, the bag can hold up to 33 feet (10 metres) of pipe insulation. Safe-T-Strip is manufactured in three (3) standard sizes, for outer diameter of insulation of 6", 10" and 14" (15cm, 25cm, 36cm), with custom sizes available on request. There are four basic designs for horizontal pipes, vertical pipes, tees and valves. Other configurations can be provided as "specials". Here are a few of the many advantages of using Safe-TStrip over conventional methods: Safe-T-Strip completely seals off the immediate work area and localizes the potential hazard. Safe-T-Strip in position forms a tight seal, therefore eliminating the need for negative pressure. All personnel in the area are protected by Safe-T-Strip without the need for masks or protective clothing. Safe-T-Strip is a disposable container. The asbestos waste material is safely and easily handled for trans porting to an approved land fill site. Normal operations in the area can continue without interruption. The safe use of Safe-T-Strip by semi-skilled personnel can be achieved after a brief instruction. Safe-T-Strip can be efficiently used by a single worker without assistance. AFE~I!~SKi? It is not to be used in direct contact with temperatures over 156 F (69 C). DPMC-17320 The procedures are similar for vertical pipes, valves and tees. Safe-T-Strip designed for valves and tees includes an internal zip lock fastener (optional on horizontals and verticals) to effectively seal the waste material in the lower bag. This feature allows use of Safe-T-Strip in more than one location. ENCAPSULATION CONSULTING REMOVAL ; ABSCON* | 'Division of ; DOLAN DESIGNS, INC. j R.V. Dolan ! 6801 E 11th Avji.
