Aircofiex 510 is the first latex vehicle ever introduced that combines a strong pigment-binding capacity and good low-temperature coalescing properties with good leveling and hiding.
Its pigment binding and coales cence come from its deformability and particle size distribution. Because of these properties, it can be formu lated into paints having excellent color and sheen uniformity as well as good touch-up properties. Its level ing and hiding are comparable to those of coarsc-particle-sizc latices. It is well known that the latter, unlike Aircofiex 510, do not fuse well at low temperatures, nor do they have
the pigment-binding capacity of fineparticle-size latices. Hence, Aircofiex 510 manages to combine a set of properties that have been unobtain able up to now in a single emulsion vehicle. It can do this because of its unique acetoxylated polyethylene copolymer backbone.
Another property directly trace able to its copolymer backbone is its resistance to ultraviolet light. Although Aircofiex 510 is partially composed of ethylene, it is not at tacked by ultraviolet light because branching does not occur in the ethylene segments of the molecule. This prevents film degradation and early chalking, thereby insuring a
long film life with good tint retention.
The unique copolymer structure is also responsible for the alkali resist ance of Aircofiex 510. The wide spac ing of the acetoxy groups on the polymer backbone enables Aircofiex 510 to resist hydrolyzing in the presence of alkali.
The flexibility and elongation of the Aircofiex 510 copolymer are sim ilar to those of the original acetoxy lated polyethylene copolymer, but Aircofiex 510 is tougher and less soft. Its molecular weight is high, which gives the finished paint film good scrubbability on interior surfaces, and durability and resistance to dirt pickup on exteriors.
