I am writing to request a meeting the week of 7 November or thereafter to discuss an important regulatory issue that will significantly impact on innovation and the competitiveness of the European animal health sector, and on production of leading veterinary medicine products in Belgium. Member State regulators and the European Commission are planning to restrict the use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) substances in most products. The restriction proposal will come soon and will have serious impacts on the animal health sector. A ban on PFAS use would remove best-in-class animal medicines from the EU market and restrict the availability of inhalation anaesthetics that are used in complex surgeries in humans and animals. A restriction would also affect manufacturing of animal health products in Europe for local use and for export. It would also restrict the ability to meet the objectives of the EU Pharmaceutical Strategy. We would appreciate the opportunity to sit down with you to discuss Zoetis' role as a global market leader in animal medicines innovation, and outline how veterinary medicinal products and industrial emissions from production in our sector are strictly regulated in the EU to ensure human, animal and environmental health and safety. Given the public 1 attention on PFAS at present, we believe a discussion on the use of PFAS in animal medicines and the low exposure pathways from this use is warranted to understand the need for exemptions for animal medicines.
