Dr, K.A, Kehoe, Dept, of Physiology, College of Ivledicine, University of Cincinnati, Gincinnati, Ohio, U.S.A. Dear Dr. .Kehoe, Gleaning of Storage Tanks. I have just realised that the Royal Air Force at their various stations possess several thousand storage tanks -which are used for the storage of leaded aviation petrol. The most usual size of tank is a 30' x 9' horizontal one having a capacity of about 12,000 gallons. 1 understand that the current practice is for these tanks to be cleaned about every six months on a routine basis. Let me make it quite clear that these tanks are merely distribution tanksand not blending tanks,, that is, they are filled from.rail tank cars from the main blending installations. As far as'I can gather the R.A.F. have no specific instructions dealing with the lead hazards, and, before raising this point with them, I thought I would write to you to see if you are able to differentiate between blending tanks and purely storage tanks so far as the interpretation of the tank cleaning regulations is concerned. I should be very grateful if you could give me an early reply as quite obviously I must take this matter up with the R.A.F. Perhaps at the same time you could indicate to me what is the precise practice followed by the U.S. Army Air Corps in this matter. Yours very truly,
