Cyprus laboratories have continued extensive evaluations of our own and competitive talcs under actual production condi tions since that time. This program involved monitoring of our own mine and mill production, competitive products, and airborne dusts in both our own and talc consuming plants. The results of this work show : All Cyprus Montana talcs are entirely free of asbestos minerals even at improved minimum limits of detectability by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Cyprus California talcs generally show no asbestos minerals at these lower limits, but occasionally may show trace (0.1%-0.3%) amounts of tremolite by X-ray diffraction. Airborne dust samples at all Cyprus manufacturing plants are negative for asbestos minerals including tremolite. The occasional presence of trace amounts of tremolite in Cyprus California talc has therefore no practical effect on airborne dust under plant operating conditions. The Food and Drug Administration is currently developing criteria fixing the permissible level of asbestos impurities in the food, cosmetic, and drug applications. Pending establishment of these standards, we continue to recommend only Montana talcs for food, drug and cosmetic uses. We attach a list of Montana and California talcs for your reference and suggest that this letter be kept with previous correspondence on this subject.
