Charles Luckman & Associates, Architects, Los Angeles, California WARRANTY The assemblies shown in this brochure and information there-to, have been developed with due regard to practical construction methods. However, since the Georgia-Pacific Gypsum Division does not have any prior knowledge of a specific building design and its construction or the methods of application used with its products, no warranty of per formance is made. All test results have been obtained under controlled laboratory testing conditions where environmental variables are reduced to a minimum. In the field, such lab oratory conditions are not always met, since many other variables may be introduced. Laboratory results may exceed field test results but the laboratory tests under controlled conditions are the only logical way to compare the perform ance of different assemblies. The Gypsum Division of the Georgia-Pacific Corporation makes no warranty that the performance of assemblies in the field will have a performance equal to or better than that developed in the test. TESTING FACILITIES Georgia-Pacific's major research and development center, a showplace for the nation's gypsum industry, is located at Tigard, Oregon. The two buildings house research, technical operations and the administrative offices. Since most of the research work is of a confidential nature, there are no "public tours'' such as the company conducts at many of its manufacturing plants. The new facility replaces former research and development facilities located for many years at Paoli, Pa., near Philadel phia, where G-P's gypsum division headquarters were located before they were moved to Portland. The two adjacent structures, with 16,868 square feet of floor area, are equipped with many types of research and testing devices. Sixteen staff technicians under the direction of a research and development manager, and a technical manager, de velop new products and maintain quality-control for prod ucts ranging from gypsum wallboard, Firestop with fire rat ings up to three hours, sound deadening board, Denscote plasters, to joint systems and even dental plasters. G-P holds patents on several developments such as use of glass fibers to strengthen gypsum wallboards, high strength Densite plaster and special lath for veneer plaster. Other patents are applied for, and the lab is carrying on a vigorous product development program. The technical department conducts field and manufacturing plant services, solving difficult technical problems and de velops improved manufacturing methods. Gypsum products are tested several ways at the Tigard lab. Wallboards are subjected to severe stresses and extreme temperatures to make stronger and more fire resistant gyp sum products. Sound tests are conducted to develop wall and floor/ceiling systems to assure "sound privacy" for today's residential and commercial construction. Basic research includes gypsum crystal studies and the mechanics of hydration. Technicians continually check such G-P gypsum products as Tile Backer board for installations where water is preva lent, insulating boards, vinyl-surfaced Eternawall, and other products including partition assemblies, plasters, pottery and metal moulding plasters and agricultural gypsum for farm applications. LIMITATIONS Georgia-Pacific interior gypsum wallboards are non-load bearing panels and are not recommended for use under extremely moist conditions. G-P Tile Backer Board, how ever, is the only exception to the moisture limitation. 1/4" wallboard should only be used as an application over exist ing walls. Maximum framing spacing for gypsum wallboard up to %" thick is 16" on center. Maximum framing spacing for Vz " and % " panels is 24" on center. Because of the limitations of manufacturing equipment, the maximum length available in gypsum wallboard is 16 feet. E/2 SGP 0025490 WALLBOARD PRODUCTS Georgia-Pacific Gypsum Division manufactures a full range of products to meet the needs of the construction industry both specific and general. The versatile gypsum product provides builders with lightweight construction materials that are workable, fire and noise resistant and time saving. G-P research facilities have responded to the industry's requests and have developed the following multi-use, highly reliable, low cost products. G-P WALLBOARD EDGES T--Tapered S--Square RE--Tapered with Round Edge B--Beveled (Special Order) T & G--Tongue and Groove V--Modified Beveled Edge PRODUCT DESCRIPTION 1 G-P REGULAR WALLBOARD G-P Regular Gypsum Wallboard is faced with a strong, cream-colored paper which will accommo date any type of decorative treatment. The back paper, which is gray, is as strong as the face paper. The V2" and wallboard with Tapered Round edges are recommended for single layer application in new construction. They are designed to be reinforced with G-P Joint System prod ucts resulting in a smooth, seamless surface. Square edges are recommended for use where exposed joints are acceptable. The resistance to fire exposure and sound transmission increase with the use of greater board thickness and the number of layers of board used. Bevel edge can be used where a panel effect is desired. When applied over 2V2" steel studs or 2x4 wood studs, one layer of Vi" G-P Firestop Type XXX over one layer of Gypsum Sound Deadening Board gives a 1-hour fire resistive wall and a 45 S.T.C. Va" '4' 8' S 1 G-P REGULAR TILE BACKER BOARD This is a water-resistant gypsum product with a light blue face paper, designed for use as a base for the adhesive application of ceramic, metal or plastic tile. The gypsum core consists of incom bustible gypsum rock, combined with an emulsion giving high water resistance. Ideal for bath rooms, kitchens, powder rooms and other moisture areas G-P Tile Backer Board can be erected as easily as regular wallboard and requires no finishing of joints or nail heads with joint treatment nor further waterproofing under tile applied adhesively unless required by local code. Vi" 8'to 12' T G-P FIRESTOP" TILE BACKER BOARD Same as Regular Tile Backer Board plus the addition of unexpanded vermiculite and glass fiber reinforcement which gives increased fire protection and strength. Where fire rated assemblies are required in areas subject to moisture, such as partitions between bathrooms and other interior areas, most building codes allow the use of G-P Firestop Tile Backer Board. The use of %" Firestop Tile Backer will give the same fire resistant rating as other firestop board. G-P REGULAR INSULATING WALLBOARD Regular Insulating Gypsum Wallboard is regular gypsum wallboard, with bright aluminum foil laminated to the back surface. In a single layer application it provides the advantages of regular gypsum wallboard plus having effective insulation and vapor barrier qualities A separate and continuous vapor barrier is sup plied on the warm side of the wall when G-P Insulating Gypsum Wallboard is installed. The aluminum foil, facing a V4" minimum space, reflects 90% of radiant heat, providing insula tion qualities equal to Vi" of fiberboard insulation (tested by U. S. Bureau of Standards). Panels must be installed with foil side against the studs. It has a special core and paper. 1 4' ______ i Vi" 2' 1 8' 8' RE S TAPERED EDGE: The tapered edge was originally called the "recessed edge" but is now commonly called tapered, because of the incline from the edge to about 2" into the board. This taper allows for tape and joint treatment to be applied and the completed job will be flat, smooth and monolithic. TAPERED w/ROUNO EDGE: Georgia-Pacific round edge (RE) gypsum wallboard can be used for wall and ceilings in both new construction and remodeling. It is designed to reduce the beading and ridg ing problems commonly associated with standard type wallboard. This edge forma tion provides a stronger, more rigid joint and results in a smoother wall surface. SQUARE EDGE: i-- -i..m The gypsum wallboard square edge was the original wallboard edge. Initially designed to be a base with a final covering such as wallpaper, paneling, or tile, square edge can be finished with joint compounds to form a clean monothic wall suitable for paint. Also can be used where an exposed joint is ac ceptable. BEVELED EDGE: }r'-'T-------------- The beveled edge is a suitable edge to give a paneled effect. After fasteners are cohered with a compound the board is ready for paint with grooves exposed. "V" GROOVED EDGE: r.:~ ..j Georgia-Pacific's "V" groove edge (some times referred to as the "tongue and groove" edge) was developed especially for sheath ing and backer boards, to block moisture (sheathing) or fire (backer board). MODIFIED BEVELED EDGE: The modified beveled edge is available only on Eternawall panels. This particular edge more readily accommodates the vinyl sur face decoration, which is delivered com pletely edge wrapped. The vinyl surface material is available in 15 patterns and colors. JOINT SYSTEM PRODUCTS G-P Joint System products are designed to conceal joints and nail heads and "surface-weld" wallboard panels together. Properly used, these products assure smooth, seam- less appearance of walls and ceilings, with joints as strong as the wallboard itself, G-P BEDDING COMPOUND Bedding Compound is designed to provide maximum ad hesion of tape to the joints and for initial application to nail heads and corner bead. It spreads smoothly and may be hand or machine applied. Coverage: 15 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. (Used in conjunction with 45 lbs. of Topping Compound.) 25 lb. bags. G-P TOPPING COMPOUND G-P Topping Compound is specifically designed for the second and third coats over the bedding compound. Since it is used only for topping, we are able to reduce the amount of adhesive and incorporate other materials which reduce the shrinkage and make it easier to sand and work. Cover age is approximately 45 lbs. per 1,000 square feet. Avail able in 25 and 50 lb. bags. SGP 0025493 E/5 G-P TRIPLE DUTY M JOINT COMPOUND G-P Triple Duty Wallboard Joint Compound is a vinyl multi purpose joint system product. A single bag offers taping, topping and texturing. It can be used for all coats in the re inforcing and concealing of joints in gypsum wallboard con struction. The binder in Triple Duty, being a vinyl, gives this product a wet life of 30 to 60 days duration. This allows pre mixing in large quantities prior to application. Triple Duty can be applied using standard hand or mechanical tools. There is low shrinkage and it is easily sanded. When the application is completed, the surface is ready for priming and decoration as desired with no further preparation neces sary. Coverage: 60 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. The gypsum core consists of incombustible gypsum rock, combined with an emulsion giving high water resistance. This new G-P product is ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, powder rooms and all high moisture areas. For fire rated partitions between bathrooms or interior areas subject to moisture use 5/e" Firestop Tile Backer proven by Underwriters' Laboratories in a 1-hour assembly over wood studs. The raw edges of Tile Backer Board (end joints, cut edges, cut-outs) are to be caulked with an approved waterproof non-hardening caulking compound. As an alternate to caulking, G-P can provide a special 2V2" wide self-adher ing vinyl tape to place over edges and cut-outs. Column Fireproofing Fireproofing with G-P Firestop Gypsum Wallboard provides a fast, efficient and economical method of protecting steel columns. Fire resistant assemblies of two, three and four hours are obtainable depending upon the number of layers of 5/e" or Vz" G-P Firestop used. These layers are held in place by a combination of screws and metal studs. The two, three and four hour fire rated assemblies of Firestop have passed Official Fire Tests conducted by the Underwriters' Laboratories. Fire Resistance--For three hour protection, two layers of Vz" Firestop Type XXX can be used. Test No. X513 (UL 39-3 hour). Two hour protection can be obtained using 1 layer of Vz" Firestop Type XXX. Test No. X520 (UL 20-2 hour). These are for heavyweight columns (14 W.F. 228). For lightweight columns (10 W.F. 49) use 4 layers of %" G-P Firestop Type X for 4 hour protection, 3 layers for 3 hours. Test No. X509 (UL 18) and 2 layers for 2 hour, Test No. 517 (UL 8). Lighter--As compared to other types of fireproofing, a dead load saving of from 50 to 75% can be realized with G-P Firestop Column Fireproofing. Speed of Erection--G-P Firestop Gypsum Wallboard can be installed quickly and easily when used for column fire proofing following G-P details. Minimum amount of the wire and adhesives are used. ILLUSTRATION--THREE-HOUR fire rated steel column assembly with 5/s " Firestop. X509 (UL 18). For fire and sound rated construction the Tile Backer Board must extend to the floor. SGP 0025508 Application Over Masonry Walls On masonry walls either above or below grade, be sure the wall is properly waterproofed before studding of furring is applied. Although moisture barrier gypsum wallboards are available--they are no substitute for proper waterproofing. Wood Strips or Metal Channels: Apply furring horizontally or vertically. Space 16" o.c. for Va" and 3/e" wallboard, and 24" o.c. for Vz" and 5/e" wallboard. Use concrete stub nails or power driven fasteners to install furring. Wallboard should be applied at right angles to furring. Use Georgia-Pacific Insulating Wallboard. Installation Details Application of Rigid Predecorated Panels to Gypsum Substrate Use % in. or Vz in. gypsum wallboard. Attach to studs with 1% in. wallboard nails, 1 in. drywall screws (metal studs) or drywall stud adhesive. Joints need not be taped or sealed. Install the gypsum wallboard vertically with the edges cen tered on the framing members. The rigid predecorated panels should be applied using a bead of panel adhesive over each stud. Secure paneling at top and bottom plates with 4d. finishing nails 12 in. o.c. and one at mid-height per stud. The addition of gypsum wallboard as a substrate when using predecorated panels provides increased FIRE RESISTANCE and SOUND CONTROL. Be sure surface to be covered is reasonably straight, and free of fragments of mortar or other protrusions. The adhesive fills in irregularities in the masonry surface. Grabit may also be used to apply wallboard to polystyrene insulation material that has been used against the masonry. Grabit may be used without water proofing on exterior walls which are above grade. Tem porary fasteners or bracing may be necessary until Grabit sets. E/21 Wood and Steel Stud Application There are many different kinds of construction systems and all are based on the requirements of your particular build ing installation. Basically, the main considerations are us ually: Fire Resistance, Sound Transmission, Relative Strength of the Installation, Dimensional Restrictions and lastly Economy. After the wall and floor and ceiling constructions have been selected, it is important that they be installed properly. The following precautions should be taken during installation to avoid situations or conditions which will detract from the sound control properties of the assembly: Avoid connecting plenum chambers, ducts, vents, etc. These permit the unrestricted flow of sound. Corrective measures are to make partitions full height, and use ducts lined with absorbent material. Materials: All gypsum wallboards, metal runners and ac cessories, joint system products used, shall be G-P Gypsum Wallboard Vt " or %" thick Regular or Firestop, 4' wide x ceiling height for vertical application or up to 16' long for horizontal application, tapered edge. Framing: Prior to the gypsum board application, all framing members should be true and firmly nailed in a plane sur face. Provide double studs at all corners. Both inside and outside intersections are formed by extending one edge of a panel over the other edge in a flush position and covering with tape and joint treatment. In singly ply installation, all ends and joints of gypsum wallboard shall occur over fram ing members, except that this is not required for treated joints at right angles to framing members. Application: Gypsum wallboard may be applied horizontally or vertically to framing with nails or screws. (Alternate meth od-stud adhesive may be applied to studs before applying gypsum wallboard.) The gypsum wallboard shall be attached with nails meeting ASTM-C514 or with IIA" long G-P Type "W" drywall screws--1" long G-P type "S" Drywall screws. Solid and Semi-Solid Gypsum Partitions Oher systems of drywall construction consists of the ab sence of wood or metal studs, either of which has its par ticular fire resistance deficiency value. In the following four systems (partially explained below) the common factor in each is that they are all constructed (except for floor ceiling runners) entirely of some form of gypsum incombustible material. 2" Solid Laminated-- (Non-Load Bearing) A 1" gypsum core board with a V2" gypsum laminated to each side; no air space, a 2" solid wall. Joints: All joints should be taped and finished with tape and joint compound, nail or screw heads should be finished with joint compound. Exterior angles are covered with G-P Metal Casing Beads and finished with joint compound. F/99 2V4" Semi-Solid Laminated Gypsum Wallboard 2Va" Semi-Solid Laminated--(Non-Load Bearing)--A cen ter vertical rib (or stud) composed of 2 layers of gypsum laminated (1" x 6" rib, 24" o.c.) is the base upon which 5/e" gypsum wallboards are laminated to each side. This leaves intermittent 1" dead spaces for wiring. Has a 1 hour fire rating, simplicity of installation saves money, a 30 decibel STC, creates smooth walls and provides extra floor space. Double Solid Laminated-- (Non-Load Bearing) Consists of laminating V2" gypsum wallboard to a 1" tongue and groove coreboard homogenous or laminated on each side of a 3" air space. There is absolutely no connection over the air space except at the jambs. Has a 2 hour fire rating, greater strength than standard frame or thin solid wall, a 47 decibel STC and smooth wall surface. Triple Solid Laminated-- (Non-Load Bearing) SGP 0025510 The center piece is a 1" gypsum core panel running the height and length of wall, on one side of which is dead space the other side is filled with fiberglass insulation. Outer sec tion of wall (on both sides) is a Vi" wallboard laminated to 1" coreboard (this gives a IV2" wall on both sides of center section). This gives a three hour fire rating, a 57 decibel STC and smooth monolithic walls. %" Firestop*--2 Hr. Rating-- Incombustible, Floor/Ceiling 2" SAND-GRAVEL CONCRETE U.L. Design G505 (UL 259)--2 Hr. It is a non-load bearing wall, designed for resistance to uniform wind loads without excess deflection. Important advantages of the system are: 1. Much lighter weight than masonry, 2. Non-combustible and economical, 3. Can be completely erected from one side, 4. Practically eliminates the need for scaffolding, 5. Panels can be individually removed for backside maintenance, 6. Minimum clean-up. Metal Components "J" Track 2 HOUR SHAFT WALL PARTITION The partition consists of a basic pre-laminated core unit 1 s/e" thick by 24" wide, which fits into a top metal "J" track and bottom "L" runner. Metal "T" splines are inserted be tween each core unit. The core units are subsequently se cured to the "T" splines, and top and bottom runners. Installation of the facing layers and surface finishing can be accomplished later to coincide with interior partitions. This system meets the ATSM El 19 requirements for 1 & 2 Hour Fire Resistive Classifications. It is also designed and tested to meet a variety of wind loads at various heights. The standard gauge of the metal components is 20 gauge. However, other than the 20 gauge may be used, as shown in the table on the following page for various wall heights, deflections and wind loads. The facing generally consists of 2 layers of Vz" G-P gypsum board. The exposed layer may be Vz" Dens-Cote Base and Dens-Cote Veneer Plaster, or Vz" G-P Tile Backer. G-P Shaft Liner System has passed the following fire tests: 1 Vz Hour System--Ohio State Univ. T-4982 2 Hour System--Ohio State Univ. T-4958 2 Hour Chase Wall--Ohio State Univ. T-4991 2 Hour Alternate Wall Underwriters Lab. Design 42. These components are to be secured with power driven fasteners, or equivalent, at 24" maximum centers. The 15/a" Shaft Liner core units are inserted top first into the "J" track and p.ushed flush against the bottom angle runner. These core units are sep arated by the "T" splines, which are positioned so the flat, or flange, side faces the shaft. Type S-12 drill point screws 2"-2%" long are used, 24" o.c., to fasten the core to the "T" splines. At the extreme top and bottom, screw the core to the runners, at points 2" on each side of the spline, using the drill point screws. Screws will protrude slightly on the unfinished shaft side. Two layers of Vz" Georgia-Pacific Regular Wallboard, 4 ft. wide by partition height are applied to the face side. Each is installed parallel to the Shaft Liner panels. The first layer is offset from the "T" spline by 12", and the second layer staggered 24" from the first. Installation is by % " beads of adhesive, or full lamination. For improved sound isolation, adhesive should fill the joints at each "T" spline. The facing sheets are also secured with 1s/a" Type G screws spaced 24" o.c. at edges and center (1st layer) and 16" o.c. at edges and center (2nd layer). Finish joints and screw heads in nor mal manner in preparation for the final decoration. SGP 0025513 E/25 Alternate 2 Hour System (UL42-2 Hour) The "L", "J" and "T" metal components and the 15/s" core unit are erected in the same manner as the basic system. Two layers of We" G-P Firestop'* wallboard 4' wide by parti tion height are then applied to the face side. Use adhesive (or laminating compound) and screws as described in the basic system. Use V/e" screws on finish layer into "T" splines. See page E/31 for details. 2 Hour Chase Wall (T-4991) After erecting metal components and 15/e" core unit, install G-P "L" angle runner horizontally on 40" centers through core unit to "T" spline. Erect 2Vi", 25 gauge steel studs and track 3" from core unit. Brace studs with angle runner. Apply one layer of %" Firestop* to studs. See page E/31 for details. V/i Hour Wall (T-4982) The "L", "J" and "T" components and the 1%" core unit are erected in the same manner as in the basic 2 Hour system. The one layer of We" G-P Firestop* is screw-lami nated to the core unit and metal components. Offset joints from "T" splines by 12". The Georgia-Pacific Shaft Liner System is designed for versatile performance. Ease of construction from one side makes this wall ideal for use in locations other than vertical openings (such as stairwells). The system takes much less space than masonry or stud walls. Both sides can be finished by adding a layer of regular board over the "T" flanges on the back side. "T" splines should not be used over 10' 0" 'Height selection table based on tests by Wiss, Janney, Elstner & Associates General Working Conditions During cold weather, temperatures in the building should be maintained at not less than 50;F during application of adhesives or joint treatment. There should be adequate ventilation to dispose of excessive moisture during these periods. For steel frame construction, installation of top "J" track should be completed before application of any spray-on fireproofing. The poured concrete floor should be reasonably smooth in the area where the "L" track is to be installed. If the "L" track is installed close to the edge, the concrete may spall unless a fastening plate is set into the concrete to which the track can then be applied. The "T" spline and Shaft Liner panels should be no shorter than %" less than height of the shaft opening. Limitations 1. Georgia-Pacific Shaft Liner walls are non-load bearing. 2. Do not use in areas of unusually high moisture conditions. 3. Electrical or mechanical piping, wiring, etc. should not be incorporated unless furred construction is used. 4. Adhere to gauges and heights shown in table. 5. Provide control joints at maximum 30 ft. intervals. 6. When hand rails or other heavy items are anchored to the Shaft Liner System, install 22 gauge metal strip be tween the Shaft Liner panels and facing layers.
