I explained to him that we did have some asbestos gaskets in place associated with the sinter plant demolition and that the contractor, D&L Griffin, assures me it is common practice for steel mills to take steel with asbestos gaskets. O&L indicated that once they decided who they were selling the steel to, then they would get a letter from the mill accepting the gaskets. Duane indicated that he would definitely would want the letter in hand. He also had some concerns about transportation modes should the gaskets not be in an intact state. Duane said that at the projects at Hayden and Denver, the gaskets were removed on site by an abatement contractor. I also spoke with Debra Marlow (TDH) and sent her a copy of the notification form with an explanation about the gaskets. She returned my call ,this date, indicating that the form has been filled out properly but she is not sure about the gasket issue. She is going to be contacting her "engineer" to confer on the gaskets going to a mill, if this acceptable. However, because it is filled out correctly, and we do have ASARCO down as the abatement contractor, we could proceed with the 10 day notification and she would get back with me.
