The data is presented in five tables. A summary of all personnel monitoring data for the laboratory is shown in Table 1 while individual exposure data is presented in Tables 2 through 5. VC1 Analytical Lab Technicians As indicated by the data, there were 5 out of 8 samples greater than the action level of 0.5 parts per million (ppm). Three of these five excursions were over the 1.0 ppm VC1 standard. Fractometer Operator Personnel exposure to VCM in this job function was minimal due to not handling any VCM during the time periods in which monitoring was conducted. Stock Room Operator No VCM sample containers were handled during the periods in which monitoring was conducted. VC1 Laboratory Supervisor Exposure to VCM was minimal in this job function when monitoring was conducted. General Comments As indicated, there are some excessive VCM exposures occurring rather frequently in the analytical lab technician job function. It is difficult to pin point the reason, or combination of reasons, for these excursions. However, these excursions do occur often enough to warrant a more thorough look for possible reasons. Possibilities for these exposures may be poor, or inadequate, capture velocity of the laboratory hood, turbulent air flow in the face of the hood, accidental release of VCM samples when someone is engaged in analysis, and personnel may be exposed outside the laboratory (i.e. when going to the hydrocarbon plant to get samples). 3851 Other job functions in the laboratory that handle VCM should be monitored whenever they are actually working with vinyl chloride. Perhaps this can be arranged in the near future. Routine VCM monitoring efforts by Corporate Medical Department personnel at the Baton Rouge Plant is expected to continue on a monthly basis--particularly in those areas and job functions where VCM exposure values are equal to or greater than the action level (0.5 ppm). Even though this is a continuing monitoring program it should also be viewed as an intergral part of the overall industrial hygiene activity at this facility.
