Seymour May 12, 1988 ABERDEEN CHEMICAL PLANT SAFETY This letter is the Aberdeen Plant's response to the safety action item from the Managers Team Meeting of April 27 and 28, 1988. The Aberdeen Plant's performance on RWC and MTO cases for the first seven months of 1988 is that our employees have experienced only one MTO. However, we did have one MTO this past week making our total two MTO's year-to-date versus six for the first seven months of 1987. Although our performance is improved over 1987, I believe our safety effort here can be improved. My department heads and I are beginning more direct involvement in order to demonstrate our commitment to safety and interest in employee injury reduction. The specific actions we are taking at Aberdeen to help reduce injuries are: - I have met with all department heads and discussed the need for their direct involvement in safety and injury reduction. - Each department head has provided input to me on specific actions in their departments. - Ted Lyon is meeting with his entire Maintenance Department today to discuss safety awareness and performance with all of his employees. - Recent efforts in Maintenance are to increase and emphasize the front line maintenance supervisors' responsibility for their subordinate's safety including job planning and review and daily enforcement. - Safety emphasis in the last month in Maintenance has been placed on minimum protective equipment use (gloves, glasses, hard hats, hearing protection, shoes). Also, personal responsibility for worker safety and that of one's co-workers has been stressed. - Our Central Safety Committee will begin conducting its meetings on a set monthly schedule rather than setting a time monthly which resulted in missing some monthly meetings. - In response to employee feedback, the plant is revising its safety shoe policy and will be announcing that on the bulletin boards (to begin 10/1/88). ABD00306347 T. Huffman 5/12/88 Aberdeen Chemical Plant Safety Page 2 - In vinyl operations, Paul Kober is going to be taking a more active role in his monthly safety meetings to demonstrate his commitment. - In vinyl, safety will be a topic in each daily operations meeting and weekly Natural Team meetings. - Chris Turner is taking an active role in his compound department's monthly safety meetings. - In compound, the shift supervisors make daily safety reminders to their operators and note these in their logs. - In compound, we have started encouraging the operators to plan and lead the safety meetings during some months. This is intended to elevate their interest and participation in all safety meetings. - I have begun attending monthly safety meetings to demonstrate commitment and interest in employee safety. - My Natural Team will meet on May 19. One topic for discussion will be how to get feedback from all employees on the topic of "How We Can Reduce Injuries to Aberdeen Employees". - I plan to write a letter to all employees' homes stressing safety and informing them that we will be asking for their input on how to reduce injuries.
