Final reports have been received on the Dow' metabolism investigation and tera tology study. Also the experimental portion of iBT's chronic , inhalation and the tabulating of data in the Equitable Environ mental Health (formerly Tabershaw-Cooper Associates) epidemiology study have been completed and final reports are expected soon. The results were recently presented orally to the Vinyl Chloride Technical Panel. It is felt, however, that further metabolic work should be undertaken to finish this investigation. At their meeting on April 28, the Panel recommended two proj ects for management approval: (1) additional Dow studies to complete the investigation of vinyl chloride metabolism, and (2) a proposal by Dr. Tamburro at the University of Louisville to search for useful diagnostic tools. The additional metabolic studies are designed to investigate the in vivo binding of vinyl chloride to macromolecules, includ ing those with sulfhydryl groups. This is postulated as the possible mechanism for detoxification of vinyl chloride. Parallel studies investigating in vitro metabolism and binding properties are also planned. A cost of $115,000 is expected for this work, which will require about one year. It is anticipated that no further funding will be needed in this area when above is completed. BOR 010413 -2- Dr. Tamburro's team ia examining workers exposed to vinyl chloride. The bulk of the funding for this project is from The National Cancer Institute and covers only accepted methods for diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Tamburro has requested MCA's support at the rate of about $200,000 per year for the development of new diagnostic tools. The Panel recommends favorable action immedi ately for the first year and in the future will probably suggest continued support for two more years. The Panel also considered the advisability of proposing an epidemiology study dealing with birth defects. Work by Dr. Infante and others of National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health appears to implicate vinyl chloride but has a very weak data base. However, action was deferred pending the outcome of studies under way by The Center for Disease Control. \ It is expected that the remaining contingency funds will be adequate to cover administrative costs and contingencies for the new projects.
