You are all aware of the increased emphasis which the Government has put on safety as a result of the new Federal Safety and Health Law. I am particularly interested in maintaining safe conditions in all of our plants in order to minimize unnecessary pain and suffering as well as the financial burden placed upon employees who are injured on the job.
Some of our divisions have - shown marked improvement in their safety programs which has been reflected in significant periods of time without lost-time' accidents.. Other divisions which a few years ago had complete 12-month periods without - lost-time accidents have slipped to such an extent that they are now at or near the bottom or the Woodward group in accident frequencies.
I would impress upon you the fact that attention to safety is one of your primary responsibilities, equal in importance to your atten tion to production. A good safety program cannot be maintained by merely paying lip service to safety. A good safety program has its beginning in top management's interest and support and can be con ducted only where there are good communications between top manage ment and each succeeding level of supervision. The front-line supervisor must communicate with and motivate all employees report ing to him in order to maintain the necessary interest in safety and in order to eliminate hazardous conditions and practices.
I urge you to give this matter your immediate attention and let's see if we can make Woodward Company an outstanding company with respect to safety!
