U. Dernahl, Assistant Medical Director Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation 30 East Forty-Second Street New York 17, New York Dear Dr. Dernehl: Thank you for your letter of January 12. We anticipate using "Vinylite"resin for injection studies of lungs in various experimental and clinical conditions. These procedures have been described by Dr. A. A. Liebow of the Department of Pathology at Yale University. We are now in the preparatory stages of this investigation, and we are not able to adequately foresee our ultimate needs for this compound. However, if you could furnish us with several pounds of this material, we would certainly be able to work out our methods. If it is not possible for you to furnish us with this compound, we of course would be very happy to reimburse you. We are extremely eager to start our work and would appreciate your prompt attention in this matter. Sincerely yours, JK:aer Jerome Kleinerman, M. D. Jerome JClelnerman Dept, of Medical Research Saint Luke's Hospital 11311 Shakor Boulevard Cleveland 4, Ohio Dear Dr. Kleinermani In reply to your letter of January 6, 1956 to our Bakolito Company regarding Information about "Vinylite" resin VTHH Specification 1, Z oan give you the following data. This material is a copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate with the vinyl ehlorlde being present slightly in excess of 80 per oent. It is sold as a fine flour without added stabilisers or plasticizers*- It would be helpful to us to know the proposed application for this material. If it is Intended to convert the flour into film for use on humans, your attention should be directed to a recent publications `Further Studies of Polymers as Carcinogenic Agents in Animals,* B. S. Oppenhelmer, CANCEH RESEARCH, 15*333*340, June, 193$. While this paper demonstrates the development of malignancies after film implantation in animals, this is no proof that similar responses will occur in nan. Hven though such responses have not been observed in hwans, the possibility must be considered. Otherwise the resin is considered to be physiologically inert. ^ ;C Zf the quantity of material desired la not large Toad the application is suitable, Z feel sure that a supply can be made available without charge. Information on the proposed use will expedite notion on our part. , & Very truly yours. 0. 0. Dernehl, M.
