STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE
Opening of Equipment in Vinyl Chloride Service
I. Equipment in Vinyl Chloride Service
A. #2 Dilution Tank pumps B. #2 Dilution Tank C. Rectifying Column D. #14 compressor suction trap E. #14 compressor discharge filters
F. High Pressure Condenser G. Vinyl Chloride Make trap H. Lines connecting A-G
II. Preparation of the Suction Side of the #14 Compressor for Opening
A. The stripping should be shut down according to the operating manual procedure.
B. All vapor and varnish lines should now be put into the position when the system is in normal operation, except that the varnish valve to the field storage tanks should be closed, the suction valve to the #14 compressor should be closed, and the acetone from the rectifying column tails should be closed.
C. A material balance on the stripping columns, rectifying column and dilution tank shows that the rectifying column has the highest Vinyl Chloride percent - 26.5% hy volume.
III.
D. In order to bring the percent down to less than 2%, we must do 5 repetitions of pressure build-up and release. Therefore, tie a nitrogen hose into the suction trap of the compressor. Since normal operating pressure is 4 psig, build the system pressure up to 8 psig. Then close the niti'ogen line and open the suction valve to the compressor. Using the compressor, pull the system pressure hack down to 4 psig. Follow this procedure 5 times in order to lower the Vinyl Chloride to 2% by volume on the suction side of the compressor and in the compressor itself.
Preparation of the Discharge Side of the #14 Compressor for Opening
A. Leave all valves on the discharge side of the #14 compressor as per normal operation, except close off the reflux DMV to the rectifying column, the discharge valve of the compressor, the Vinyl Chloride make line and the valve off of the make trap to
2622 or 2626 tank.

B'. A material balance and vapor analyses on the discharge side of
' the compressor say that wo have AC% Vinyl Chloride by volume.
'Again, 5 repetitions of pressure build-up and release are needed.
,, " ^Therefore, tie a nitrogen hose into the compressor discharge
* and build the pressure from AO to 80 psig. Then vent this down
** r
into 2622 or 2626 tank to AO psig. Repeat this procedure 5 times
- and the concentration of Vinyl Chloride will be below 2% on the

discharge side of the #1A compressor.
IV. Preparing the #2 Dilution Tank Pumps for Opening
j i> A, After the stripping system has been shut down, open the 1" acetone line that is tied into the suction of the pump.
B. ' Wash the pump for 15 minutes with this acetone.
I
C, ` Then close off the acetone and follow the Master Tag Out-Lock Out procedure for the pump.
