I* duPont de Nemours Wilmington, Delaware Dear Doctor Lubs: Under date of October 26, at the suggestion of Hr. Philip Shuey, I wrote you requesting information about tetra ethyl lead gasoline. Another question has arisen which I carried to Philip Shuey and again he has suggested that I impose upon you: Assuming that gasoline containing lead (tetra ethyl), when exposed to air and agitated, evapo rates; does the lead evaporate with the gasoline? That is, if it evaporates at all, how does its rate of evaporation compare with that of the gasoline? To state the question more nearly, as it arises in my case: Suppose an open container like a bucket, into which is poured lead gasoline, in which at in tervals of every ten or fifteen minutes an auto fart is washed; at the end of three or four hours if any gasoline remained in the bucket, would the gasoline remaining have the same concentration of tetra ethyl lead as when drawn from the tank? If by evaporation alone the amount of gasoline in the bucket had been reduced to'one-half, would the concentration of tetra ethyl lead in the remainii^ gasoline be approximately doubled* ' I send this letter with the hope it will reach you before you have replied to my letter of the 26th. Notwithstanding Phipip Shuey*s liberality with your time and skill, it has occurred to me that in send ing my problems on to you I may be running badly out of bounds; if that is the case please feel no hesitation in telling me so.
