Fluorotelomer intermediates were initially selected for study because they were expected to be among the possible compounds into which the fluorotelomer-based surfactant and polymer products may potentially degrade. Our environmental fate research has focused primarily on the fluorotelomer intermediate 8-2 Telomer B Alcohol [8-2 TBA; CF3(CF2)7CH2CH2 0 H], which we have shown to be hydrolytically stable [half-life (t^) > one year] and non-toxic to microorganisms at concentrations greater than 100 mg 8-2 TBA L*1. Our research in this area has expanded to include environmental fate studies on the fluorotelomer-based surfactants and polymers. We will summarize the environmental fate studies that we have conducted on the 8-2 TBA, including an air/water/soil partitioning experiment. We will also discuss biotransformation experiments that we performed on the fluorinated surfactants and polymers.__________ Biodegradation of Telomer surfactants and Polymers * 2 8 -D ay C 0 2 Evolution T est - Test substance primary Csource - 20 mg CA. - Ba(OH)2to trap C 0 2 - Fluoride measured with Ion-specific electrode 100 0.6 Telomer Phosphate Surfactant DuPont Fluorotelomer Product Groups: Intermediates, Surfactants, Polymers Water-soluble, anionic (RfCH2CH20)xP(0)(0NH 4)y - where Rf = F(CF,CF*)z 1,, ts isisg m mm mm J % ft 0.2 I 20 0.1 v T 1f = S 10 16 20 26 3a Telomer Ethoxylate Surfactant Water-soluble, nonionic ftfCH2CH2OCCH2CHzO)xH - where Rf =F(CFjCF2>y Telomer Acrylic Polymer 150 fig 8-2TBA L'1, sterile conditions pH 4 ,7 ,9 @ 50C pH 1.2 @ 37C Sealed glass vials with Al-foil liners 4 replicates at 0 and 5 days - Analyzed with GC/ffS DlfTolenco % *6-4 -6-7 Soil / W ater Partitioning Two materials - Keyport silt loom Sand 17%.
