Model R Heatrim baseboard panels --stylish modern comfort that's easy to install
'ymmetrically styled for modern, low-silhouette aopearanee ..designed for fast, low-cost installation...and engineered for peak hydronic performance... that's Model R Heatrim, a residential baseboard from American-Standard. Compact Model R Heatrim stands only 7%'' high and extends only 2'V," into the room when set flush against the wall, and even less wnen recessed to plaster depth. Homeowners 'ike the simple, uncluttered look of Model R Heatrim panels . ana the decorating freedom provided by the white semigioss prime coat, which may be left as is or repainted later (with any good duality alkyd base paint) to match room decor. Installers lu<e the convenience of working with this oasecoaro. The back panel stands unaided against the
wall so that all back panels, filler and joining pieces can ce positioned and fastened to the wall by one man. Brackets, dampers, front panels and accessories snap right on No tools needed. No time wasted. Two high-capacity heatm.: elements are available for installation flexibility. And Moce' R Heatrim is packaged to meet any need. It's shipoea completely-assembled, bulk or individual packages ,n 2. 4. 5. 6. 7, and 8-foot lengths. Also available is a 2-`---t completely-assembled unit, plus 10 and 12-foot enclosures 'either bulk-packaged or assembled). 1-enclosure top and back panel-is of one-piece steel construction for strength and durability. Smooth surface won't collect dust and lint. Lower portion is extended H" out from wall to cover any openings between wall and finished flooring and to let panel stand unaided while being fastened to wall.
2-snap-in braekets-are die-formeo of one-piece heavy gauge steel to support front panel and element wnere re quired; can be located at any point along back panel.
3- enclosure front panel-is of flat, dent-resisting steel: firmly snaps onto brackets either way (there is no tcp or bottom edge) ano is easily removed for cleaning v.nen necessary.
4- air intake space-ailows unrestricted circulation of air for maximum heating efficiency and permits easy c.eaning underneath element.
5- pivot-mounted damper-allows positive fingertip con trol for easy opening and closing from any point along its length; can be set in any position to regulate heat flow. Damper is standard equipment... no extra charge.
6- enclosure interior-gray prime coat provides back ground so that brackets and element blend in.
7- joining piece set-consists of front piece, back piece and damper piece, each two inches wide to neatly cover joints; included as standard equipment.
8- heating elements-two high-output elements are avail able, eacn with heat-reflecting interlocked aluminum fins (vented for maximum performance) bonded to seamless copper tubing for quick response, high l = B = R approved ratings.
9- element slide cradle-of lead-coated metal (ternepiate) for lubricant snckness; snaps onto element ano rides in pracKet tor noiseless linear movement of element.

system data and design
Mainless installation, in which Model R Heatrim panels serve as part of the main, is the most economical system tn which these panels can be used. This installation results in substantial savings in labor and material in that valves and additional piping are eliminated. The Comfort Engineered Design Procedure has been devel oped by American-Standard especially for mainless systems to pro vide a quality installation at low cost.
1. Calculate the heat loss of each room, using a recognized formula such as outlined in the I = 8 = R Heat Loss Calculation Guide or the ASHRAE Guide.
2. Lay out the design of the system, using a recommended guide such as the American-Standard Comfort Engineered Design Proce dure. the l = s = R Installation Guide, or ASHRAE Guide.
3. Select the prooer length of Model R Heatrim using the tables on pages 4 and 5: or the Comfort Engineered Design Slide Rule.
4. To complete the installation, install Model R Heatrim enclosures wail to wail to cover the bare pipe.
Tabulated ratings show heat emission expressed in 8tu/hr per lineal foot of Model R Heatrim for average water temperatures ranging from 220 to lTG'F. ano for average water flow rates of 500 pounds per hour and 2C00 pcunas per hour. Since heat loss calculation is expressed m Btu/hr, selection of Model R Heatrim can be made right from these tables. The elements themselves serve as part of the mam. Where structural arrangements such as doorways occupy part of the waif, the piping goes down under the floor and comes back uo at the exact spot necessary for connection to the next element. End caps or valve enclosures are used for finished appear ance at these points.
circulators
A standard circulator (7-8 foot head) will meet most requirements for mamless residential installations. The chart below lists maximum lead-length combinations for senes looos. using a standard circu lator (7-3 foot head) ana a 20CF. temperature drop.

C.ers zed pumps (pumps with too high a head for the system) may :ajse noise m a system as a result of high water velocity, or cause cavitation resulting from the high heao and the improper placement of the pump m the system. The 1 = B = R Installation Guide or ASHRAE Guide will aid m the proper selection of a circulator.
near boiler piping and air vents
1. Original Fill--recommended near boiler piping and procedure for filling system is shown in the appropriate Technical Catalog Bulletin
and Installation and Maintenance Manual for the American-Standarc boiler to be used.
2. System Operation--air and gas liberated on heating the water ithe bo.ier must be prevented from circulating through the system Many American-Standard boilers have a built-in air-eliminating de vice. Other boilers must be piped with an external air-eliminating device. When Model R Heatrim units are used with mains and risen in either one-pipe or two-pipe systems, each section or panel shouic be vented at the return connection. A sweat elbow with a Va-mcr vent connection is available for this application.
Orains should be provided when necessary.
expansion
Provision must be made to prevent distortion or noise due to expan sion. A straight run of Model R Heatrim. when not restricted, tenc: to give an equal expansion at each end. with the center remaimn; stationary. If one end is restricted, the expansion is cumulative along the entire length with the total amount of the expansion bemr evident at the free end. If both ends are confined, the element bo*! up in an arc to accommodate the increased length.
The following table lists the maximum lengths which can be stalled if both ends are free to exoand when the water temoeratu,s raised from 703F. to the average water temperature shown:
average water temperature F.
