Wright to M. R. Werden, same subject, 10/29/79) The reference le tte r reviews information on PC-143, a 3MCompany product, used a t Parkersburg in Teflon dispersion which in tu rn is vised in Teflon opera tions a t SpruSuce. Blood te sts on employees who work w ith PC-143 showed up to 70 ppm of organic flu o rin e in 3M employees and up to 22 ppa in Parkersburg em ployees compared to a general background level of le ss than 1 ppm. No adverse health, effect has been detected in any o f the exposed people. Tests a t Haskell Laboratory revealed th a t PC-143 readily penetrates th e skin of animals and causes liv e r damage and in heavy doses may cause death. In view of th is inform ation, a decision was made to analyse blood samples from a sm all group of Spruance employees with p o te n tia l PC-143 exposure In Spinning and Finishing and a control group. The analyses o f blood samples were carried out a t Jackson Laboratory by the same group th a t analyzed samples from Parkersburg. To ensure continued protection o f personnel against exposure to EC-143, operating procedures w ill continue to be based on no skin contact w ith Teflon dispersion. Ko sp ecial precautions are required fo r yam handling. In routine periodic au d its o f operating area conditions and p ra c tice s, sp e c ia l atten tio n w ill be given to those factors which p ro tect employees against exposure to EC-143.
