Dear Connie
GBON 87697-COLOURS
As you know there is so EC list of colours approved for use in food-contact plastics - such a list will be prepared eventually but is unlikely to appear before 1994/95. In die meantime, use of colours will be regulated in 2 ways:
1. National lists where these exist (see earlier NATEC comment on Germany).
2. Compliance with die general 'freedom from harm" clause of the EC legislation covering food contact materials.
Satisfying (2) can only be assessed on a prodnct-by-product basis, but application of die German criteria stated by NATEC ("zero" migration) would seem reasonable.
Since there is a list of EC-approved colours for direct food additive use, this list would also seem to provide a reasonable starting point for colours acceptable for food-contact use. Neither Ultramarine Violet No(5 or Ultramarine Blue No. 29 are on this list under these names, but do you know their Colour Index numbers so we can check ifthey are listed under another name?
