In v en to ry V aluation: In v en to ries of logs an d lum ber generally are valued for financial purposes a t the low er of L IF O an d average cost or m arket (based on current sales prices). In v en to ry costs include m aterial, labor and operating overhead. L IF O inventories are com puted using the dollar-value m ethod, and accordingly it is n o t possible to p resen t a breakdow n of inventories betw een finished goods and raw m aterials and supplies. P roperty, P lant and E quipm ent: Provisions for depreciation of buildings, m achinery and equipm ent have been com puted using straight-line com posite rates based upon the estim ated service lives of the various units of property. E ffective straight-line com posite rates for principal classes of p ro p erty and equipm ent range from approx. 5% to 20%. N o g ain o r loss is recognized on norm al p ro p erty dispositions; p ro p erty cost is credit ed to the asset accounts and charged to the depreciation reserve accounts and any p ro ceeds are credited to the d*preciation reserve accounts. W hen there are abnorm al disposi tions of p roperty the cost and related depreci ation reserves are rem oved from the accounts a n d a n y g ain o r loss is reflected in incom e. Co. capitalizes interest on borrow ed funds during construction periods. C apitalized in ter est is charged to the m achinery and eq u ip m ent acco u n t and am ortized over th e life of th e related asset. Co. defers start-u p costs on new construc tion projects during the start-u p phase, and am ortizes the deferral over seven years. Investm ent tax credits are accounted for u s ing the deferred m ethod. Credits are am or tized over an eight-year period as a reduction of depreciation expense.
