RUMBERGER PITTSBURGH OFFICE - AB 749 1979 September 11 RE: ASBESTOS In reference to your letter of August 27, there are several areas of asbestos used In electrical work which are not covered. One application Is high temperature wire and cable for use on smelting pots and on furnaces. We will use silicone rubber with either glass braid or a new product Rockhide for these applications. The attached memorandum and lit erature was sent to smelting electrical people. Another application is flamemastic fireproofing material for cables in ladder. ALCOA APC 003872 FKOK R. L. WHITE PITTSBURGH OFFICE - WPH 4 t TO MEMORANDUM 1979 AUGUST 29 RE: HIGH TEMPERATURE CABLE FOR EXPOSED POT SUPERSTRUCTURE WIRING I have attached some sales literature and a sample of a newly developed wire and cable covering which appears to he well suited for the captioned application. Of particular Interest are the qualities of high abrasion resistance, high temperature rating, and asbestos free construction. There has been a requirement for asbestos free pot wiring on the last two new potline designs. At the moment, Rockbestos seems to have the only product that meets all requirements. If you happen to be contemplating new construction or rewiring of superstructures, this' Information may be useful. This Is still a very new product so I cannot offer any experience on delivery or quality control. Should you decide to try the Rockhide we would be very Interested In the results. Cable construction is not limited to those listed on the brochure and can actually be supplied in about any configuration desired. R. L. White RLW:qj cc: L. C. Drapela/J. A. P 1918 - Rockbestos Company was formed to produce the first truly high temperature wire insulated with asbestos utilizing the patents of J. Allen Heaney. 1938- Rockbestos develops first high tempera ture glass fiber outer braids for smaller diameter and lighter weight coverings. 1978- Now- "Rockhide"a tough, outstanding, abrasion resistant braiding material developed as a third choice for wire and cable design engineers.
