M c Cann, Professor o f M edicine and physician -in-chief a t Stron g M em o rial H ospital, th a t show s how fa r silicosis h as developed in a patien t. M ounted on a h ea vy base, the bi cycle ergom eter has a b rakin g m echanism com posed of a large copper disk w h ich revolves betw een electro-m agnets. B y m eans of w eigh ts on a graduated lever arm attach ed to the disk, the rider ped aling at a constant speed can be observed w o rkin g a t differen t rates. E xpired breath passes through a valve to a recordin g spirom eter. T h e increase in expiration is g re a t est in those a fflicte d b y a dust dis ease, ph ysician s pointed out. D r. M cCann, au thority on pneu m onoconi os is, believes th a t S ta te com pensation la w s should require objective tests to determ ine w hen a ctu a l d isab ility begins in th e dis eases resu ltin g from such m ineral dusts as sand, gran ite and asbestos.
