TENNECOinter-office memo CHEMICALS, INC. To J. W. Poarch from j_# Medeiros At Burlington At Flemlngton subject FLEMINGTON P.E. MONTHLY REPORT June, 1975 D*TE June 30, 1975 copy TO h.B. Carr W.C. Champion R.S. Cole Dr. L. Gross J.W. Me Broom W. Miringoff P.R. Scarito A.C. Siegel J.T, Sweeney J.J. Zullo JP*jlot Plant - Flemington *^Fi le TENNECO 315 FOR CBS. SPA-1055 Selected lots of Flemington 315 resin were evaluated at CBS. None met with their acceptance. Lots evaluated were: lot of low relative viscosity (1-52); lot produced with a 1/1 ratio of A/B gelatin; lot with Epoxol 9-5 in the charge (0.5 phm); and a lot with Epoxol 9-5 add to the slurry (0.75 phm). The Flemington plant was in a coarse particle size trend when the above lots were in process (high percentage on 60 mesh screen). Two standard batches following the Epoxol 9-5 charge "set-up". The lot processed with A/B gelatin produced acceptable Q.C. particle size distribution in the midst of the coarse trend. As a result of the "set-up", all production at Flemington is with a ratio of 1/1 Atlantic A/B gelatin. It appears there may be a correlation of particle size distribution and fusion energy. R&D believes that elimination of the cumulative 80 mesh would lower the fusion energy (Brebender Test) and yield acceptable processing at CBS. Several lots have been assembled for testing this assumtion at CBS (7/2 or 7/3/75)* A narrow particle size distribution of stabilizer in the dry blend processing (because of surface area uniformity - but an excess charge of stabilizer could also collect the "staining" if this is the actual problem). Initial Flemington production was with 108 rpm and two baffles. Particle size distribution with these conditions yielded low percentages on the 80 mesh screen, Lot 625011 produced during this period will be sampled to CBS. Other lots to be evaluated at CBS during the first week of July are: (1) a repeat the Epoxol 9-5 with standard particle size distribution; (2) lot charged duplicating the Burlington formulation - 15-2% MVAc charge; (3) a lot charged with Burlington water and into the standard Flemington receipt - this may have to be repeated due to reactor glass contamination; (9) and a lot produced with 1 baffle and 108 rpm and/or 2 baffles and 108 rpm. COLORITE 010586 June, 1975 Page 2 COPOLYMER DRYING High volatile problems in drying was eliminated with the revised recovery procedure and particle size control. Particle size distribution was coarse with a high 60 mesh fraction. This was a continuous problem with T/391. The use of A/B Atlantic gelatin brought the distribution into Q.C. specificationsThe steam stripping was revised to include recovery down to 15 inches mercury prior to heatup. This is a check for proper operation of the recovery system prior to the steam stripping sequence (filters not plugged). Production is planning modifications to the recovery system (stripper vacuum recorder and higher gpm defoamer pump). Other problems in this area are the centrifuge (plow being modified), wet cake chute (engineering designing new chute) and the wet cake screw (production is remoting inner bushing away from screw flights). CYCLE TIME STUDY No time expended in this area. Production is currently on a five batch per day schedule. LOP FOR INCREASED VOLUMN CHARGE This LOP to increase volumn charge at temperature to 4800 gallons was not written due to other priorities. VCM RAIL CAR UNLOADING A report was issued (6/11/75) on estimation of VCM heel in rail cars not degassed A safe estimate of VCM heel based on saturated vapor was estimated at 3200lbs. (year round). Included was a graph from which a more accurate estimate could be obtained if both pressure and temperatures in the rail car were obtained after equalization to storage. Production has requested a more definite estimate based on past data, with possibly a heel level for each season. A second report is being assembled using VCM un loading data for the year 1974. T/389 FOR CAPITOL RECORDS Due to Capitol Records problems in processing 315, Production is currently charging a two batch lot of T/389 for a sample evaluation. Neither plant has produced this product since early 1974. MISCELLANEOUS Attended a Seminar in Flemington on Gelatin (Mr. Foley of Atlantic). Went to Kalman Paint in Trenton to look at blending equipment. R&D has proposed that Kalman blend their lead stablizer mix if CBS approves its' use in our compound or resin. Kalman has no exotic blending equipment, but what he has is probably . adequate to blend the 1600 lbs. per day of stabilizer that would be needed. LM: km , L.
