Re: Literature Search on Violent Monomer Polymerization
Dear Mr. Fawcett:
Pursuant to our conversation of 16 May 1973 concerning the subject literature search, we will add a seventh item to the proposed work statement to include coverage of all A.I.Ch.E. Loss Prevention Symposia proceedings published during the last 2 0 years.
We hope that the proposed work statement meets your requirements' and that we can soon begin work. The proposed project team is prepared to initiate Phase I of the effort upon receipt of official authorization to do so. We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely yours

Re: Literature Search on Violent Monomer Polymerizations
Dear Mr. Fawcett:
We are pleased to provide the following suggestions for the statement of work relative to the subject proposed effort. The literature search will cover journals, trade magazines and books as well as patents and proceedings of technical meetings . Our information searchers will seek kinetics and red action rate data for polymerization of the 12 monomers in question under the various potential conditions in which they are stored, shipped and loaded into containers. We will look for published data concerning temperature, impurity, mechanical handling, stagnant residence time and other factors that could ef fect or prevent violent polymerization of the 12 monomers.
The effort will take place Over a six-month period. Tn the first phase we will systematically search each of the following six sources for the twenty year period, 19 53 to 1973:
1. Chemical Abstracts
2. Bielstein
3. Uniterm Index to Chemical Patents
4. ACS Meetings Proceedings
5. SPE Meetings
6. API Meetings
In the execution of the search we will prepare two bibliography cards for each citation selected. One will be for the chemical file Indicating which of the 12 monomers was discussed in the cited source. If more than one monomer of interest is discussed in a given citation, we will prepare a card for each. The other bibliography card will be used subsequently for sorting by key word or subject. The searcher will niake notes on each card indicating the relationship

of the information in the source cited to the problem of violent polymerization. The EJC Thesaurus will be used as a guideline for key word selection In the annotation. Where abstracts in Chemical Abstracts or Blelsteln prove inade quate for bibliographic annotation, the information searcher will revert to the full text of the source cited.
.As each source (e.g.. Chemical Abstracts! is exhausted, the searcher will scan the bibliography cards on which annotations are entered. Scanning the cards will facilitate the identification of frequently occurring key words and therefore headings under which we could logically group annotated biblio graphic citations.
When the literature search phase is completed for all six information sources, we will collect and group the two sets of bibliographic citation cards, one set by chemical and the other by key word. We will alphabetize each set by chemical or key words and type the bibliography. After proofing and correc tion, we will reproduce it in quantities up to 100--for use by the committee on Hazardous Materials.
We will be happy to propose as a follow-on effort a program to extract selected data from the literature cited and include it In a state-of-the-art paper with recommendations for programs by the Committee on Hazardous Materials
We look forward to discussing this proposed effort with you and to negotiating the statement of work for the contract.
Sincerely yours,
JAK/HE/arg
